Sport climbing anchors?

Does anybody know what is used for installing the sport climbing anchors on indoor climbing walls? I know that most walls are made of a textured 3/4" plywood, but there must be some extra support where the anchors are set. I can't imagine the plywood alone is strong enough to take a lot of falls.

Usually there is a backing of 5, 5x8's with a metal backing, with the 3/8" bolt going through it all.

There's sport climbing indoors? I thought the only thing you could do inside was gym climbing.

Shows what I know.

Anyway, where is this indoor sport climbing? It'd be nice to have for rainy days.

I've never timed it, but it's rediculously fast. In softer rock it drills 1/2" holes almost as fast as 3/8". I've pretty much gone to using the 1/2" X 5 1/2" bolts shown in softer rock.

I had a hilti TE-10A, but once I got the ryobi gas drill, the hilti was sold. The nice thing about gas is you don't have a battery to puke 1/2 way through a route, and it doesn't slow down hole to hole. You do have to keep an eye on the muffler Blush

I am not sure if I understand what you mean. What are "5x8's"? Is it wood? And how much steel? Thank you for the post, but maybe a few more details.

Sorry, I goofed. 3"x8" pieces of wood, with a metal bracket behind. If you want, I might be able to get some pictures from work.

I understand, I make typos and spell things wrong all the time. And yes, some pictures would be great. I would really appreciate that.

they make a "frame" out of steel beems that all stick out at different legnths.

then they just add the cover, whether that's the textured plywood or the plaster/concrete stuff..

That's why some gyms have bolts that you're only alowed to "trail" off of (becaus they're not attached to the beams, just the wood/plaster)

Exactly. Anywhere you see a bolt with a quickdraw attached to it you can be sure that there's a steel frame beneath the plywood.
