I used to only carry a chock pick when trad climbing. Every once in a while you get that stopper that just won't budge so i started carrying a small (3") vice grip. Now I reach for that before my chock pick. Anyone else come up with better tools?

A partner I have made his own nut pick and put a rounded flat end on it so you don't kill your hand when you bang on it. It works well. I am hoping that he will modify mine.

Please explain how you use vice grips to get out stuck nuts. I assume it is not just a hammer. As for the flat spot for pounding out pro, Ushba makes a nut tool that has one. It is made of titanium, so it is lighter than any other nut tool, but costs twice waht any other nut tool costs. Somone else makes one with a plastic handle that is palm friendly. I want to say it is Wild Country, but I can't remember. [ This Message was edited by: wlderdude on 2002-10-25 17:41 ]

I keep a small ball peen hammer (3 oz head) tied with accessory cord to my nut tool. Sometimes just a small tap with the hammer will loosen a nut the the net tool alone can't budge. I jsut drilled a hole at the base of the handle and tied it to the nut tool. It only weighs in at about 6-7 oz with the handle so it is no big deal to carry. Got the tip from nctxclimer (Keith Leary). Climb On

I always carry a funkness device with me to the crag so that if I spy some stuck booty I can funk it out. Of course I also carry my aid hammer as well cos a funkness device can`t be used unless one has an aid hammer. ...Phil...

I have wired hexes and nuts so I just used the vice grips close to the rock for better leverage..

Using a large hex as a hammer on a nut tool is a great idea. Whoever suggested that, very good thinking

Actually I find a mid size hex is heaps better as it fits in your hand and you have more control over the hammering action. My personal choice is about a number 6 rockcentric, you have the nice round side against the palm of your hand and the slightly concave back of the hex ensures that the nut tool doesn't slide off and hit your hand......

a small, flathead screwdriver with its shaft bent about 20 degrees works as a great nut tool, and beats spending 15 bucks at REI for something that isn't much better. Down with REI!

I havent be hauling it around with me latly but I made a small alumn. hammer with an alumn. rod attached that can get pretty much any stuck nut out, the rod is 8" long so it can even get deep placements loose. Les NOTE: Yes your right, I'm not sure I can spell aluminum.

Try putting a 24" runner on the nut and give a good upward yank, if you've got a hammer use that on the end of the sling. Or you could get a "funkness" device and do the same thing, however a sling is far more convient!
