Hi. I'm new to climbing (apx 4 months), and I just bought a 70m 9.8 dynamic Petzl rope. After I bought it, some people at my climbing gym said they've heard back things about Petzl ropes, regarding quality/durability. I thought Petzl's were some of the best, but I still have the receipt and haven't opened the package around the rope. Should I return it or keep it? Any advice?

Keep the rope. Some issues of durability have come up but all the people that I've talked to that use Petzl ropes don't have any complaints. 70 meters for the gym! A little excessive. If you NEVER plan to climb outside and your gym is 15 meters or less in height, cut the loooooooong sucker in 1/2.

All the complaints I've seen (no personal experience of petzl ropes) are about the petzl zephyr, which if memory serves is somewhere between 10 and 11 mm, not a 9.8..

He doesn't mention using it in the gym, and 70 meters is nice for a lot of sport climbs. To the OP: I'd pick something a little thicker for your first rope. Something 10.3 or 10.5 will last you much longer.

I own the 60m version of that rope and love it. I have only used it for half a season outdoors so far, but I have had no issues and would recommend it.
