sad news. I actually was just out on my first ever ice climb yesterday, so the news is kinda more real now that i have a taste for the sport. This article and the cbc article don't don't specify really what happened at all. I hope more details are released in time to let us know what went wrong so that newbies (like me) and veterans alike can learn from it.

I see on Gravsports there is mention of a second incident around the same time, I'm not sure if it was at Guiness or elsewhere.

This one strikes rather close to home in that I knew Ivo from various climbing encounters and actually spent a week with him climbing BC. Ivo was a strong, fit, very expereience climber and yet a very quiet and always happy man with a very kind soul and willing to take on any challenge from extreme alpine climbs to helping completely new climbers. He will be missed by all, no nicer guy have I met.

Skinner I already posted this few days ago but here is another update By Kevin Duncan Kevin@thecrag.ca Tuesday April 01, 2008 A Calgary man plunged to his death Sunday in an ice climbing accident on Mount Dennis in Yoho National Park. Ivaylo Minkov, 29, fell 60 metres while climbing the third pitch of the Guinness route, one of the most popular of the four ice columns on the peak. A report was received around 3:15 p.m. from Minkov’s common-law wife who was below him at the time of the accident. Despite being a popular route the two-person party were the only ones on the pitch. “When his partner left the man was unconscious. She repelled the other two pitches to go for help. When we arrived on scene there were no vital signs,” said Marc Ledwidge, manager of mountain safety programs for Banff, Yoho and Kootenay National Parks. Banff and Lake Louise park wardens responded to the scene via Alpine Helicopters and rescue pilot Todd Cooper. Golden RCMP and a B.C. coroner were on hand to transport the body. Minkov was referred to as an experienced climber but was only in his second season of ice climbing, according to Golden RCMP Sgt. Marko Shehovac. “The local coroner and police are continuing their investigation,” Shehovac stated, adding that the family in Bulgaria has been contacted. Parks Canada advises that all people entering the backcountry who undertake risky activities should check on conditions and skill level requirements prior to use. Conditions at the time of the accident were rated as good, according to Ledwidge. The Guinness route is considered grade four ice. In comparison, Bourgeau Left near the Sunshine Village parking lot is labeled as classic grade five while Cascade waterfall is grade three.

Here is a email I recieved from Ivo Minkov climb friend. I have hid the name as I have not gained or requested permission to release her name.
In reply to: I regret to inform you that Ivo Minkov passed away on Sunday. He was ice climbing with me (his climbing partner and close friend) and fell 60 meters. Currently we are unsure as to why the accident occured as I was unable to see or hear him. We have set up a blog to coordinate information about his death and to coordinate a fund to help with transporting his body to Bulgaria. http://theivominkovmemorialfund.blogspot.com/ I am sorry to have to inform you of this news. Ivo's girlfriend and I are struggling to communicate with his family as they don't speak English. Any assistance you could provide to his family in Bulgaria would be greatly appreciated. The issue here is getting his body back to his home Nation, please use the link and the paypal.

In Calgary as per http://theivominkovmemorialfund.blogspot.com/...ocation-calgary.html There will be a Wake on Sunday April 6, 2008 in commemoration of the life and spirit of Ivo Minkov. He was loved by those who knew him, and we would like to have an informal get-together to share stories and pictures of our friend. We are collecting memories, stories, pictures, etc. to share with the people who gather. We would also like to present letters to his family in Bulgaria in the hopes of giving them a glimpse into his life here in Canada. Where: Apt 416 - 535, 8th Ave SE (Buzzer 069) When: April 6, 2008 (1pm - 5pm) Attire: Casual wear (representative of Ivo)
