There's ice climbing and occasional rock outcrops in Nebraska (they are hard to find, but they're there, I've seen the pictures). There's bugger all in Louisiana. Sure there's sweet fuck-all where you are, but you're within striking distance for an (admittedly burly) weekend trip to Vedauwoo, or Wild Iowa (its near Monticello), depending on where the weather's good.

You could always see if they will allow you to climb barefoot.

Having not owned a pair for a good while during the time I was really getting into the sport I climbed barefoot, and grew to like it (i was climbing outdoors the whole time however). if they do let you climb barefoot give it a try its not too bad once you get used to it!

Climbing barefoot in the gym is gross. Everyone's feet stink, and you are putting them all over holds that others have to put their hands on. Outside, you can do whatever you want.

Yeah, and then the person working at the wall has to tell you to put your shoes back on and then you mutter about the nazi wall management. Its my least favorite part of the job. "My feet don't have any diseases", you'll say. That may be the case (although I've yet to meet a climber that didn't have mad foot funk), but tell the dude who hasn't seen a shower in 8 months who sees you climbing barefoot and figures its ok for him too. We spray out our rental shoes for a reason.
