I am a PhD student at the University of Sussex, UK, carrying out a programme of research concerning the experiences and motives of people who climb. My previous research has explored the views of those who participate in a wide variety of climbing styles. Now I am looking to restrict my focus to the experiences of those who participate in ANY of the following climbing styles: traditional, winter, soloing. The survey should only take about 20 minutes. Please copy the link into your address bar to complete the survey: https://www.lifesci.sussex.ac.uk/research/psylab/ncl1/index.php Any feedback is always greatly appreciated! Many thanks Neens

OK, I took a serious, sincere shot at the survey, but... I may be stuck at home for six weeks recovering from surgery, but I don't have the great time and convoluted logic required to figure out this survey. I understand why you are asking why people climb, even for 5 reasons, but to attempt to explain why I chose each reason just went beyond my ability to concentrate.

Ok, I admit it is a survey that requires stamina but trust me from behind the scenes there is a rationale for it. In brief, I just want to get a fuller idea of people's views and experiences and asking a 'chain' of questions is more successful at doing this, if a little testing for the respondents. Hope it wasn't too taxing! (if you did it...i think you may not have though)

I too was frustrated by your survey and could not come up with 5 chained reasons fully so did not finish or submit. I might suggest that for this sort of qualitative inquiry you choose a less structured approach. By the nature of your survey you assume that there are logical and compartmentalized reasons with further separate thought behind each one. I'm not sure that motivation to climb can be explained in that way. A phenomenological style interview series (phone or in person) would probably be much more illuminating and also allow you to ask follow up questions that will get much better answers than a survey format. I'll volunteer to be interviewed if you choose another method. Good luck though. :-)

You listed the question "Do you plan on doing your principal climbing style in the next month" three different times. Was this on purpose?

Did anybody review your questionnaire? Like an adviser? An editor? Someone who could help you avoid writing questions like this: "Q.26 For a moment consider only the positive things about participating in your principal climbing style. Please rate how positive those positive things are." Jay

Well I just finished the survey and it didn't take too much time. Honestly I thought the whole process was rather interesting. The questions about why do I do it, why is that reason important to me etc. made me really think about why I'm out there climbing... Answering this survey was an educational experience for me. Hopefully you will appreciate my frank and honest responses and I hope you get some good info from us!!

I do understand this can be annoying for those filling in the survey, however I do have to check for reliability. Thanks for giving it a go though!

No worries. I was just making sure. Sometimes when I'm writing things like that I tend to over emphasize things I'm really interested in.

I agree this is a badly worded question, however I am following theoretical perspectives here and certain things have to be phrased certain ways...annoying, but little I can do about it if I have to defend my position for peer review. Thanks for your views though! Jay
