I have a pair if Anasazi slip ons and they are beginning to smell real bad. I have put Lysol and powder in them which only mask the odor. I was wondering if it would be a good idea to scrub the with a toothbrush and detergent? or something like that. Please help or give advice.

Gotta spray 'em regularly to keep ahead of the stench. Do a search for ideas on how to rehab them, this topic has been discussed pretty thoroughly. Or watch the movie "Holes".

I have Anasazi velcros which smelled so bad that the neighbors thought I had a corpse stashed in the house. Then I wore them on a deep water solo trip. They came home full of salt water and sand and sea life. I figured there wasn't much to lose, so I chucked them in the washer (frontloader) with a small amount of detergent in warm water (there is no cold water where I live). They came out clean and almost odorless. Since then I've washed them three or four times, and there's no visible sign that this treatment is damaging them.

The Anasazi velcros are not made of natural leather, which might explain why they don't seem to mind repeated washing.

Go for it. If they smell as bad as they seem then you have nothing to lose. I'd use cold water, and air dry them in a warm place (don't air dry in a cool place or without airflow). Once they are clean air them out EVERY time you wear them. Nothing is worse for shoe smell then staying in a bag after they've been worn.

NO! don't ever wash your shoes, embrace the stench. The ladies love it.

Try Febreeze fabric deodorizer. My feet have not yet adjusted to Texas temperatures so my rock shoes occasionally try to walk home by themselves, but Febreeze works and keeps them sweet for about three weeks. Its cheep and doesn't damage them, although if you wear them before it has dried your feet will be the colour of your shoes.

I have had a pair of moccasisms for a number of years, and have washed them several times. I just used luke-warm water and a scrub brush in the sink, very little soap, and copious amounts of water.
They may even shrink up a bit, so if they're getting stretched out, this is a good thing to keep in mind.

A little Penguin Sport Wash from REI in a cold wash cycle usually stops my shoes from smelling like a dumpster.

i have a leather la sportiva testarossa, a top shoe with a very tight fit and asymettric shape, i put em in the washer ever +-3months and they haven't been deformed, shrunk or expanded the tiniest bit, only problem is that the colors are washing out, so my yellow has become orange and the red is turning pink....

*add some laundry softener (or however it's called) for super-fluffy interior CoolTongue

i have the velcro anasazi's also. i had been at the rock every day for over a month, and was always barefoot accept when i was climbing. the inside of my shoes were so full of dirt that they were a half size smaller! I went DWS one day in some crystal clear water (island in Thailand) and when I jumped in my feet had dirt trails in the ocean!

I rinsed them with dirt water, they ended up completely clean. just don't let them dry in the sun and don't let them dry somewhere too cold.

washing is the only way to keep the shoes from stinking too badly, though soem shoes are less prone to stink than others. I have tow pairs with synthetic insoles and they stink badly if I don't wash them regularly, (not real frequent, like only when I begin to notice reek) my rd pair has leather inners and take much longer to start semelling...

another way to avoid smelly shoes is to not go barefoot between climbs. dirt + sweat + warmth + natural foot bacteria = stench. dirt/organic material is food for the fungi & bacteria, and the stink is their poop...

climbing shoes int eh washer? I've NEVER heard of that but I'm trying it tonight! my velcro Quechuas have definitely begun to reek.

There is something called Mirazyme Odor Eliminator that is designed for de-stinking paddling/diving gear (wet suits, dry suits, etc.), which really do stink after a while. Its apparently also suitable for sports gear.

http://www.rei.com/product/694530

Anybody tried this stuff on climbing shoes? I've been thinking of checking it out.

Its supposed to work on "severe odors". I think stinky climbing shoes can definitely be categorized as such!
