You can find some companies sell a camera to portable hard drive connector. Or I know Belkin did sell a camera to iPod connection that downloaded the photo's straight onto the pod.

There are also a bunch of specialised photo storage devices that include a viewing screen and even some basic editing. They're quite expensive, though. Rather than these, I ended up going with a 60GB Creative Zen Vision W, which has the advantage of being a fully fledged portable media player. It has a CF card slot, and an option to back up cards to the internal hard disk. You can view the JPEGS (no RAW viewing on this one, unfortunately) and if you start to get strapped for space, you can delete the ones you don't like quite easily.

to do it on the cheap, just go to an internet cafe/computer library (whatever theyre called north of the equator) and dump them- id make 2 dvd copies of everything (and mail one home) & also upload them to an online storage DB (cheap & easy). total cost= $2 computer use, few dollars for internet storage, 70c a DVD? i dont know how many photos you plan on taking, but the very expensive little viewer/HD units are usually what, like 60gigs? Wouldn't be that long before you'd have to dump onto a computer anyway...

In a pinch, I think the Ansel Adams gallery may offer a service like CD burning

Considering the kind of money and limited space that an external of the type your talking about gives you, I think you'd be a lot better off bringing a cheap laptop. You can find capable laptops with DVD burners in the $400-500 range easily, just keep your eyes peeled. Given that you'll still need to plugin the external HDD to use it anyway, I don't think your even losing any convenience. Checkout these sites regularly: www.slickdeals.net www.bensbargains.net There are frequent deals to be had, if the deal shows up on the front page it's hot enough to be good. Slickdeal's Hot Deals forum is a good place to lurk, things come through there pretty fast. Good luck.
