OK, so im finally making my road trip up to North CArolina from Miami. Im lookin to do 3 things while heading up, and once i get up there, 1) Rock Climb 2) Whitewater Raft 3) Hiking/Backpacking through the mountains(preferably Blue Ridge) Im not looking for the popular tourist spots, im looking for a down to earth experience. Im a first timer in all the above except the hiking/backpacking, but am still looking for a VERY challenging experience! Where should i go? And ill be passing through GA and SC so any cool places to stop up there would be great. THANKS!

you have "guides" already? going solo? rafting is a no brainer insofar as pick a river. show up at a rafting company and figure it out. do a little online research. maybe make a reservation. climbing, if you are a first timer and solo, maybe try Fox Mtn Guides or somesuch similar outfit. need more info...

I would suggest for climbing you go to http://www.climbmaxnc.com/ and get hooked up with them. The rates are reasonable and the owner is great to work with! If you have never done it, you would need gear and the gear and everything would be included in the fee. Best way to reach him is stuart@climbmaxnc.com. He is in Asheville, NC by the way.

For Whitewater rafting, I would go to http://www.noc.com/ and check them out. They have great guides and are always on the water so you should be able to find a spot open.

I second the NOC for rafting... never used a guide svc. for climbing but if you're a first timer I'd recommends finding a guide or at least someone on here who is willing to teach you some stuff.

If you're looking for a good adventure, I'd suggest checking out the mummy or the daddy in linville gorge. A tough approach, and then a 4 pitch climb with phenomenal exposure makes for a good time. The climb itself isn't too hard, but if you have not climbed outside much then you're sure to get an experience you won't forget.
