I was wondering if any other climbers out there have or still deal with BPPV, What is benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV)? Vertigo is the feeling that you are spinning or the world is spinning around you. Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo is caused by a problem in the inner ear. It usually causes brief vertigo spells that come and go. For some people, BPPV goes away by itself in a few weeks. But it can come back again. BPPV is not a sign of a serious health problem. Mine seems to come and go..really bums me out! Seems to happen when I shift my head back and to the right! Looking for positive feedback! Peace and Gratitude! MP

Ya try layin' off the sauce? Just kidding. I don't have vertigo problems, but I know people who do. I can't offer any feedback. I just couldn't lay off the softball.

It's AWFUL. Ok, there are things you can do to fix it. Search the epley maneuver on youtube, do this exercise and it will move your calcium bits and pieces back into their proper place. Go to an ENT MD and have them to the maneuver to you so that you know how to do it at home. My vertigo is triggered when I get in and out of bed and when I look up (bad for belaying/sequencing). I have spent the last few months climbing through my vertigo. I look up, wait for the world to stop spinning and then I climb. I find that when I am climbing I am usually pretty good, although sometimes I get woozy. I kind of "go for the ride"...let the world spin and then I resume whatever I was doing. My vertigo is dissipating, but it's still there. There is also a device called "dizzyfix" out of Canada. You might want to look into it. It's essentially a physical representation of your inner ear. You do the exercises to move the crystals to the right part of your ear, guided by the tool. I haven't used it, nor have my physicians. You should get relief from the Epley, then hopefully it will not come back for a very long time. Doesn't aging SUCK?

I haven't personally had it, I have only occasionally treated it. There are some pretty effective PT treatments out there. Try to find an expert. I don't know any experts in West Virginia, but I'd bet the University would be a good start.

There are other techniques to use at home as well.

I have had occasional boutes of BPPV. One thing I have discovered that triggers it is consumption of chocolate. Since I've eliminated chocolate from my diet, I've had 2 recurrences in about 5 years. I have no idea if this is a common trigger for the ailment.
