This is a question I ponder quite often, as I am some what into vehicles and am always on the look out for my next project. What I have come up with is this.
A early toyota 4x4 van, pull motor/trans and put in a cummins 4bt, converted to run on veggi oil, add a large ~30gal suburban fuel tank, build a very small trailer that would carry a very small biodiesel still, now where ever there is Wendys there is fuel. that would cover the mechanical aspect. Then add a roof tent on top and set up the interior for gear storage, and sitting space for rainy days. Run a set of ~31" Bridgestone revos, have a small 8k lb winch on the front and that would be my ultimate climbers/expedition rig!
With that said I drive a 96 2wd Tacoma, it does fine Im going to put a topper on it and call it good. For most longer road trips I take my girlfriends 2004 Mercury cougar, 34 mpg and we sleep in the back. But rough dirt roads are a no go with it.

Chevy 15 passanger van. They are selling for super cheap right now. I bought one with 10,000 miles on it for only $10K. It was originally selling for about $30K. I have a TON of room for sleeping, storing gear, etc. Gas costs an arm and a leg, but if the van is set up well, it could be your place of residence like it was for me when I was 18 to 25 years of age.

The best climbing / camping car is a 1986 volkswagen vanagon westfalia. The westfalia is the one that has a stove and beds and the top pops up for another bed.
My uncle has one up in alaska and it is the shit, take my word for it.

Hell no, I drove around in it for 2 weeks. it is in superb condition, clean, no rust, smells fine, its nice.
