I am planning on doing Lurking Fear solo next year. I want to go all the way to the top, stopping at Thanksgiving Ledge won't cut it for me. In the past, I have done Zodiac and Tangerine Trip solo. After summiting them, the descent down East Ledges was a pain - I could not carry everything and had to split the load into two and shuttle it. I hope to have a bit lighter load for Lurking Fear (no pitons or hammer). So it may be possible that I can carry everything in one load - but it will be a bear. My question is, what is the best decent? Going all the way to the top with all my gear will mean some pain in the #$^% hauling and then carrying a pig up to the top and then down East Ledges. My back hurts just thinking about that. This is a much longer decent to the East Ledges than my previous trips. If I leave most of my gear at Thanksgiving Ledge and do a quick trip to the top, that means I have to rappel back. Once at Thanksgiving Ledge, I will have to rappel the rest of the way with my pig - including some traversing rappels and possibly into other teams climbing up. I would really like to hear from climbers that have done either decent and see what you have to say about it. Thanks Todd

You know rapping the route is going to be a big pain in the ass at best, and extreemly dangerous at worst. Rapping through the hords, edges, ledges, traverses etc... If you're going to the top, its best to walk off the top IMO. I have not rapped Lurking Fear though but can imagine. You could rap another (less traveled) route. But I still think it best to walk. Try hireing some friends to help shuttle loads. Beer and high fives usually works. You could also launch an astroid later in the evening at the usual drop zone*WINK* If you got two bags, I'd launch one and walk the other. Happy hauling...

One of the guys with more varied ascents of the cap prefers rapping, and promised hisself to do it. From supertopo: "I've kept the promise twice now, after Cosmos and Dihedral Wall. There are a couple traversing pitches that need a few rope tricks, but rapping Lurking Fear is by far the Better Way down from Thanksgiving Ledge. Write me if you need beta." from http://www.supertopo.com/climbing/thread.html?topic_id=445994&msg=445994#msg445994

The hump up and over after Lurking Fear is pretty brutal. I don't think I'd do it again with a pig, A lite IAD set up wouldn't be too bad though. That being said the raps don't sound super appealing either. Porbably not too bad with a partner but solo? Apparently there are a couple of spots where you need to swing hard to get to the anchor. When you've a partner the first guy down can swing for it without the pig. Without....well I'm sure you know your options. I've not done the raps. Several friends that have say they are NBD, but they were IAD stylee and with a partner...so goodluck either way and have fun. When are you going to be in the Valley? I'll be out there mid Sept. might still need a partner of 2...maybe you could forget the pig and we'll just fire IAD! josh
