I'm not so familiar with Joshua Tree, -- I've only spent a week there -- but at least two of the problems look like the chube and gunsmoke traverse. Maybe there's a high noon attempt in there too (or at least the little dyno near the start of it). Did you walk to the dam itself? I swear, I thought I was losing my mind when I heard ducks quacking in the middle of the desert, but then I saw the water and the dam and it made a little more sense.

The exif data says it was taken on March 18th. I still have three distinct scratch marks on my chest from where I hit my chest (weak and sloppy climbing) popping up. I also ripped open my first bloody tip of the week on that problem and my hands took a long time to heal.

I don't doubt that, although nearly all the pics or vids I've seen of jt are bouldering. But I can't imagine jamming a crack on that nasty gritty sandstone. I'd have to get used to taping up, that's for sure.

It's a pretty classic bouldering area, actually. The guidebook by Miramontes lists over 1000 problems. Jay

There may be a lot of bouldering there, but i have never once bouldered when i was there. I'd say that if you go there and only boulder you're missing out on the endless quality trad climbing. You just have to man up and deal with the sharpness of the rock

When I went there it was pretty much just to boulder and it's a solid two day drive for me. I was only saying that my impression has always been that it is more renowned for it's trad climbing.

In reply to: I'd say that if you go there and only boulder you're missing out on the endless quality trad climbing. I think you meant endless quantity. For quality, you can do a lot better than J Tree. Jay

But I don't want to be bleeding all over the rock instead of waiting 2-3 weeks for my hands to heal up. So in the interest of not taking time off I'll woman up and stick to the basalt. (that's not intended as a sexist comment, I know most women climb harder than me, and are way tougher than me)

You can always tape up, although if you can place jams with a modicum of control, and not thrash around, you can climb untaped and barely get a scratch. I don't even tape there, and I'm far from being a skill crack climber. Edit: And you were wrong in your previous post about the rock being sandstone. It's a granitic rock called quartz monzonite. Jay

Jay ok, I'll trust you on this one. If the crack climbings worth it I might have to make a trip next summer, although I'm kinda hoping to do tuolumne. I could make a sweet road trip out of it and do both, and some stuff in between! and i'll remember the tape (just in case)
