RIP stymingersfink aka:daryn smith

hi most of you do not know me..

i am erin,
daryn's ex-wife of 10 years and one of his best friends.
we still spoke several times a week.

i know he visited here hourly and was even on here this morning.
i just wanted to let you know that he passed away in Salt lake City this afternoon.
and no
it was not from doing what he loved so very much.
ice climbing or rock.

he went to the ER thinkin he was having a heart attack.
while doing tests they realized it was much more critical.
they started more tests.. he crashed during the process.
there was then 8-9 people working on him and giving him CPR before he passed.
this apparently is pre existing heart condition, something none of us OR him knew about, something
he was born with that he had never had any problems
with until today.

i know he lived, loved, respected, and breathed climbing.
i know he had a great deal of wonderful friendships, partnerships & romances, from here.
we all loved him!!
and again i know he loved all of you.

i love him and he will always be one of my best, best friends...

please let his memory live on in your climbing.

if any questions please feel free to contact me at
erincunninghamsmith@gmail.com

thank you so much for being a part of his world.

Hello Erin, it was our pleasure to have been associated with Daryn or as some of us affectionately called him "stinky". He will definitely be missed around here, he was definitely a colourful character to say the least. Best wishes to you asnd the rest of the family. Do feel free to drop in on another thread in the community campground forum here on this site where folks are also leaving condolence messages.

Unbelievable. This is terribly sad. I felt sick loading this thread, hoping it was him but half thought he was playing some sort of joke on us. He was a treat online and a lovely addition to our aid forum. We planned to climb together in Zion, a wall that would have been a beautiful place to climb and I'm sorry we won't be able to do that.

Thank you for letting us know. Rest in peace, Mr. Fink.

-Kate.

I'm saddened to hear Sty has passed. He held down being himself here and that won't ever be replaced. I never met him in person but one day I expect we'll pull pranks together in whichever place jackasses like he and I end up.

I never climbed with Daryn, but he became an essential part of the rc.com experience. He will be missed.

Sty:

We never met. We'd trade e-mails from time to time, banter back and forth on message boards, and managed to disagree on just about every topic possible.

Except climbing. We both loved climbing.

Rock, ice, alpine. Single pitch, multi-pitch, and multi-day adventures.

For two guys who never met, we had a lot in common, and managed to parlay that into a friendship that spanned miles and years.

You were too young to die, brother. 35 year old men should not have heart attacks. If they do, they damn sure shouldn't die from them.

I miss you, my friend. I regret that we never tied into the opposite ends of a 10 millimeter hunk of braided nylon and asked each other to trust our lives to the other.

Damn this world, and damn these circumstances.

I'll meet you in another life, buddy, and we'll climb ice until we reach the sky. After that, we'll drink a couple beers, tell some lies about women and mountains, then do it again the next morning.

Rest in Peace, my friend.

Daryn has ceased to be, he rests in peace, bereft of life, he kicked the bucket, bit the dust, breathed his last, gone to the big glass house in the sky, hopped the rail to the pine box palace, and gone to meet the Great Head of Scary Hook Placements in the sky.

And I guess that we’re all thinking how sad it is that a man of such talent, of such unusual intelligence, a man who stood his ground and seemed to enjoy doing it, who befriended many on this site, should now so suddenly be spirited away before he achieved many of the things he was capable, and before he had enough fun.

I never had the opportunity to climb with Daryn, but I am sure it would have been a riot. He is a part of what makes this community and will be missed.

Life is quite absurd.

My condolences to his friends and family.

You will be missed, my friend.

How awful; my condolences. Daryn was one of the more colorful and outspoken contributors to this site--and he will definitely be missed. This is just so sudden and unexpected that its difficult to fully come to grips with.

I am so shocked and sorry to hear about this. My thoughts go out to his friends and family.

Though I did not personally know him, his commentary would often make me laugh out loud. He was the first and only person to deliver me a 'Meatbomb', for which I instantly liked him. Things will certainly not be the same around here. I miss him already, and am so sorry to be reading about this.

Peace, Sty. We love you!
