You mean gear we've forgotten at home/in the car, and the improvisations we've made to do without them?

harness out of a few slings but i think everyone has done that. Climbed all day without shoes cuz I forgot them but that doesn't count as improvising gear. forgot the atc a few times, munter-hitched it but that doesn't count either. The main thing that I have to improvise when I climb is how to steal food with no one seeing me ;). Oh yea.. I belayed with a motorcycle helmet once... and got nailed by a rock!

I once forgot my tricams. Instead I placed nuts and cams. I found the placements far easier and quicker to make, and often the resutant placement was far more secure. I also seemed to have a greater range of options with the cams and stoppers.

aiding off of my nut tool - used as a piton. and it wasn't even a good nut tool, it was a cheapo Acme Climbing nut tool..... already had the hammer along for cleaning, funking, etc, didn't have any pins along. Held like a charm, but bent considerably upon removal. Certainly a soft metal.

Ha! You gotta watch placements like that though, 'cause sometimes they walk.

I once had a thermarest that, predictably, got punctured on a trip. I sealed the hole by melting the handle on my toothbrush and using the melted plastic to form a seal. It held for the rest of the trip. That experience burnt me on thermarest type pad. I've been back on various ensolite type pads for the past 10 years. Brian

No, but it means you'll save money by not having kids.

Of course, that would work; but the point was I didn't have one. One could make that observation about any improvised gear. Just carry some pins, just carry an extra belay device, and so on. As I said, that was my only, brief affair with inflatable mattresses (though my wife and kids do use them). In a world of crampons, ice tools, screws, pins, etc., etc., it is easier to just use ensolite. Brian

Used varies belay/abseil systems over the years, munters-hitch, back/hip belay, abseiling using a karabiner break etc etc Stacking hexes for very wide cracks, Using the slings on hexes/friends to extend a piece of gear. Used a walking pole to prop up my tent because I forgot the poles, Worn an improvised waterproof jacket, (plastic bag with holes cut for head and arms).

I rappelled on a #11 hex once just to see how it would work. With a perfectly functional ATC-Guide on my harness, plus a bunch of biners for a biner brake, and pear biners for a munter hitch. the hex worked like a charm. just watch out for burrs on the edge of it. and if you plan on doing this, use a cabled hex so as to not melt and have to replace the nylon or dyneema sling.
