To start, yes I am a bit of a n00b. I have about a year of experience, mostly in the gym. And I would ask this question of the people I climb with there but my lack of Russian / Estonian language skill is keeping me from communicating properly with them. When I belay any one who is close to my weight or a little heavier on an overhang and they fall they swing out and something about were I place myself causes them to wail into the rope, and or start to twist up in it. For the most part I stand under the anchor or a little behind it. I know this can’t be good for either the climber or the rope, so what is the best place to put myself to prevent this from happening? Thanks for the help. -Jeremy

its not bad for the rope. the climbers rope should be clipped into intermediate pieces of gear, so he will not swing out when he falls. avoid flailing.

yeah...we have hooks on the walls in our gym specifically for that purpose. Pain to get the rope in them though from the ground...but it's what they demand.

I've seen hooks for TRing too. You just swing the rope similar to like jump roping to get them in if the last person to climb wasn't nice enough to rehook it. For the OP. Stand to the side, if you get pulled give the rope a half twist around itself, the friction will help keep you from getting pulled on do hard.
