Car Break In

On October 2nd I was camping and climbing at the North Side of Looking Glass in North Carolina. While at the cliff I heard male and female voices making a lot of noise back towards the parking lot but thought nothing of it. Upon returning to my car I found my window broken out and about $5000 dollars worth of climbing, camping, and general living gear stolen out of my car (picture someone who lives out of their car... everything I own is in there).

Please beware of what you leave in your car up there. I saw a red honda element before the break in as well as an unlocked car full of gear belonging to a staff member from the local camp High Rocks. His stuff was untouched. He was also not seen climbing at the cliff.

I am offering a reward of $500 to anyone with information that leads to me getting my gear back. I don't have insurance to cover this equipment so this is a huge hit to me.

Thanks

That's fucked up. Keep an eye on the flea markets and craigslist too.

This seems to be an ongoing trend at southeastern crags. Leda, Sand Rock, LRC, Looking Glass.... the list goes on and on. It's gotten to the point that if I'm planning to camp out at a climbing destination I'm afraid to leave anything in my car or campsite, no matter where I am.

I think I'm going to treat every weekend away to climb as a backpacking trip, and carry all my shit with me from now on.

People suck.

This is correct.

Also why I am a paranoid schizophrenic when it come to leaving valuables in my car.

Cancer of the prick for all thieves out there.

Really?? The parking for LRC is the parking at the golf course...that sounds pretty bold of the thieves.

dude that hardcore sucks....I fucking hate people who do stupid shit like that....it's super lame.

you probably did already but....did you file a police report? It won't necessarily help in the immediate future, but if these fuckers are caught at some point, then you can have an easier time getting your shit back.

on a sidenote, this happened to a good friend of mine...thing is, they stole everything BUT her climbing gear. she took that as a sign that Climbing was her supreme calling in life.

best of luck in retrieving your gear. I have no idea what I'd do if I was in your position. but I can guarantee you I'd cry myself to sleep every night.

Yeah, it was happening quite regularly for a while there. Window smash-n-grab. I think they cut down some shrubs a while back to make it easier to see the whole parking lot from the clubhouse, so hopefully the breakins will be less frequent now.

That really sucks, I have had a similar experience.

When going out and I know that I will be parking on the side of the road, or at a trailhead.
I will try to cover my valuables with a black tarp/blanket.
On the outside of the car I will leave a couple of empties on the ground next to my camp chair with a open beer in a coozie, and a issue of bow hunters, and a empty pack of cheap smokes(I don't smoke), I set the scene of a drunk redneck gone to take piss, this only works if you have a redneck sticker on you're car, and not some greenpeace/sierra club/climbin' stickers plastered on the back.
No thief that I have run into really fears a tired climber, but a drunk redneck is a totally different matter.

If you are worried that a thief may steal you're ride, then take of the coil wire off the distributer and pack it in with you, there is now no way that the vehicle will start. Just don't lose it or you end up screwing yourself.
Good luck

If I was you, I would locate every climber in that area and hang them one by one till they tell you who took your stuff.

Apparently this is a regular but not so regular thing here at Looking Glass. Now that I am one of the many victims I have been told that anyone who parks there regularly has had their vehicle broken into or stuff stolen. I assume it's because it's the last stop for climbers on this road and the least popular area.

Where is this advice when you need it?

Dicks like that should choke on their fragmented teeth.
File a police report, tell them if you find the dude, then take them along with you when you go to buy the stuff.

Perhaps post up a list of some of your gear thats missing, distinguishing markings ect. I generally keep a shark eye on all the classified sections on here, mtnproj,sp ect ect.
But then again I really doubt...(or really hope) a climber stole your gear, so watching places like craigslist and ebay maybe the best option to finding the gear.

Good luck!

Based on this suggestion, I'll avoid climbing in that area for a while. Tongue

Good luck finding your gear. I lost a couple ropes and a full rack with cams from a car break in. It REALLY sucks. Fortunately for me, I had friends who chipped in to help me out.

That sucks man sorry. It seems to be a growing trend here in the south. Let us know how to distinguish it and I will keep an eye out. I climb a lot in GA/TN/NC so if I see it I will talk to ya.

I'm really sorry to hear about your gear!

I parked there to boulder all summer long and didnt have any problems...I guess they know that climbers spend ALL DAY many times on the rock, so they dont target the parking until it is officially "climbing season" around here. I have seen the posts on SCC site and I hyperlinked it to a post on the CCC site, so hopefully more people will be on the look out.

They have also hit the South Face parking area, which is usually overcrowded with a bunch of tourists and a handful of climbers. This happened this Saturday, 10-18-08, and also last week if I remember correctly. The info I saw said that there were people around all day and it wasnt a noticeable break in, but they still targetted climbers because they know they are going to be gone all day. I'm sure a little investigation would reveal the theives and someone hidden (with a gun possibly for their own safety) could take pictures of the perps and their actions. Seems like if you hid with a view of the lot that you could get good evidence against them and hopefully retreive your stuff before they unload it. Hiding up near Slick Rock falls gives a good view of the SF and across the road, up the hill a little would work for the NF. If I had enough alcohol to keep me busy all day, I might be willing to wait around in the woods while someone else climbs:)

Good Luck getting your stuff back...will be on the lookout for suspicous gear being sold.

Those who took the gear from your car are probably just a couple of economically disadvantaged people who have been trod upon by the racist and capitalist Bush Regime. When Obama, the Messiah, is in charge, you will not have to worry about nameless people stealing gear out of your car. The government will do it for them and spread the cams, nuts, and slings around in a much more equitable manner.

Dude, that sucks.

PLEASE don't take this wrong, I'm not blaming you in the least. I'm just looking for a solution to a growing problem of suckness.

Everybody who hates this kind of behavior needs to take a share of the responsibility. Look out for seedy behavior. Listen for assholes. Keep your guard up, and be mentally prepared to take action to stop this from happening in the future. If we, collectively, stop being seen as easy marks, the thievery will decrease. Confront the thieves.

Getting the police involved is not a bad idea, but it's all after-the-fact, and most cops I've met don't follow through very well when it comes to simple, non-violent larceny.

All that is needed for evil to triumph is for good people to do nothing.

This is an excellent suggestion, I highly agree. I am usually aware of the majority of my surroundings especially in a climbing environment.

I cant imagine how you feel.
