Are there any general rules to make sure you are a courteous climber and practicing the appropriate etiquette?

Yeah, I did a search but there seems to be variou opinions that people have. I was wondering if there were a set of rules that may be set by some sort of governing climbing association. Something more solid than opiions.

I was at the cliffs yesterday and everyone was really nice but I dont want to be annoying asking questions or stepping over ropes if it is not appropriate. I am sure I cant please everbody but I would like to make an honest effort. As far as the questions go I think its like anywhere else, if the people respond in a friendly way then they are cool with it. What I am not sure about is climbers area and what is and isnt cool as far as invading their area or being too close to their equipment and walkin over their ropes which I would avoid if possibe but sometimes there isn't much room.

As near as I can figure the climbing world has a pretty standard ratio of nice folks: total pricks, but for some reason the pricks are more noticeable than normal. Try hard to be courteous, but expect to run afoul of some of those pricks even without doing anything out of line.

This post sounds so sincere but I can't help feel that no matter how I answer, I am getting trolled. What to do??

Don't talk to much.
Don't ask stupid stuff.
Don't be a dick unless you can back it up.
Same rules as almost any bar.Wink

Get out and climb. Outside the gym almost all climbers are cool people. Most in the gym are to but some feel it's there turf. AND IT IS so just blend in and after some time you'll be all good.

that is so true...gyms are fantastic for practice and a good workout, but I absolutly hate going just because of those people who think they OWN the routes...and then they stand RIGHT below you when your climbing and give you all sorts of unwanted beta on a 5.8 you chose to warm up on... Ya, I'm pretty sure I know I need to grab the jug just above my right hand. I can see the fucking tape for myself. asshat.

anyways...common courtesy applies in climbing as it does anywhere else...but basically, just be nice, smile, and be humble.

#2 rule, never step on someone elses rope. They will beat your ass. Wink

Good Luck, and happy climbing.

Seems to me that courtesy in sharing the cliff involves not thinking you own a line because you got there first but aren't ready to climb.

Possibly because they spend more time flaming online than they do climbing.

My general rule of thumb, "Do as you would be done by."

Yeh...down here in Georgia
if you step on a rope
you'll get a #4 cam placed
in a very uncomfortable
place...

"Squeal like a pig, boy!"

I don't recommend it.
I hate having to squeal...oh wait...
delete that!!!

What is it with people stepping on ropes? I mean, I know it's not great manners or anything, but when someone steps on mine, I generally just laugh it off. My gri gri steps on the rope a lot harder every time it catches.

here are a few, some have been said before:

-think twice before getting on a popular route on a weekend if you are going to be slow and hangdogging

-think twice about getting on a popular route on a weekend if you plan on letting your crew of eight toprope it

-if you are not using your toprope, offer to let other waiting parties use it and/or pull it

-don't bring a dog unless it can be completely out of the way and inconspicuous

-don't give unsolicited beta unless it is an immediate situation of potential injury

-think twice about leaving tickmarks

-learn LOCAL ethics and policies, both legal and informal, before climbing at an area.

The stepping on the rope thing has become more of a respect thing. Most climbers realize that the rope isn't going to be affect much unless it's in a pile of mud and glass shards. it's just rude to step on someone else's things period.

Also don't ever try to throw things to your friend up on the wall. Yesterday one of my friends almost got hit with an atc/belay biner because this guy wanted his GF to throw it to him so he could rappel off the TR anchor he just made. Pirate

This smells like a troll but what the hell, I can't resist.

YES there are definitely some handy guidelines you can follow, here are some of my favorites in no particular order:

1. Unless you happen to be Bob Scarpelli, LEAVE YOUR FUCKING DOG AT HOME.

2. Try to keep the crosstalk (eg. idle chatter, screamed beta, loud spraying, etc) to a minimum when you're around other groups. It REALLY sucks when you're belaying a partner and you can't hear them over the gaggle of mouthbreathers on the next route over who are in the midst of reliving an episode of Family Guy or whatever. A major caveat here: it's entirely acceptable to fake loud bouldering noises (as in "bzat!" "eeits!" etc) on your 5.7 trad ascent if doing so is guaranteed to confuse the shit out of the group of Rad Bro's on the next route. YMMV

3. If you don't have a climber on the route pull your rope.

4. Stay in the gym. Seriously. The odds are no matter what you do at the crag you're bound to (accidentally or otherwise) screw up someone else's outdoor experience.

Edited to add:

5. Keep your beta. Seriously. If I wanted your fucking beta I'd ask you for it. Better yet I'd rig a second rope so you could rap in and coach in on the crux.

Yep here's a few good one to keep you breathing

Don't chisel holds on Gunks Trade routes.

Don't add bolts in the middle of pitches on the Nose. Chiseling maybe ok (Ray Jardine) but don't risk it.

Dont' drop rocks, Ice, things, excrement, people or dogs on the group below you. Cats may be ok depending on the audience.

*shrug* Your choice. You ever finish your day at the crag only to find your dog is missing and someone's taken a shit in your pack, don't look at me. I don't climb anywhere near Ohio. Just sayin.

Rule #17: When an asshat brings the "ethic" of a gym outdoors, punch him in the cock. Don't let anybody give you beta unless you ask for it.

Unsolicited-beta-man is not welcome outdoors.

Yes, don't step on the rope is by far the my biggest deal. Don't walk in front of someone belaying. Share the rock. Be courtous and friendly. Smile at the sprayers, ignore the gumbys and haters. Stay clear of the idiots doing stupid stuff.
Ask and volunteer to share the rock with others.
Do unto others as you would do, and live and let live.

This seems like a strange question. You asked about "courtesy"... why would a "governing body" set rules for courtesy? I think that's always going to be opinion.

I agree though... it would be nice if you could find a set of recommendations developed through consensus. Things that newbies might not think of when venturing into a new situation. Of course, anyone that thinks enough to go looking for some recommendations on how to be courteous in a new situation, probably doesn't need the rules in the first place.

I'd suggest that RC.com have a central place for this kind of info, but since this is a forum it will always be cluttered with random comments by people trying to be funny (or jerks).

The other thing, and you alluded to it, is that there are different "rules" in different areas. But usually those are not about courtesy, but about climbing ethics like "to bolt or not to bolt". That's what you can typically get from a local guide book or on MountainProject.com.

Yell "rope!" before you actually throw the rope down, not at the same time.
I can't tell you how many times I've gotten close to being at the bottom of a rope pile because someone wasn't thinking...

Now when you step on a rope all the dirt from your shoe, or croc, or what ever you are wearing at the time gets crushed into that rope. That dirt acts like little razor blades on the fibers in your rope. Now i donno about you, but i don't want anything that will hurt the integrity of my life line...
