Hi,
Im doing a climbing wall in my house and i need some 3/8" 4 Prong T-nuts... i found this web page http://www.threeballclimbing.com/...gholds/hardware1.htm but now i have a question...
What is the difference between Zinc Plated T-nuts and the Stainless Steel T-nuts and why is so different the prices between each other?
Zinc Plated T-nuts = $.20 each
Stainless Steel T-nuts = $1.50 each

One is for use indoors, one is good for all-around conditions. Say you are building a structure in a humid environment or outside, then you would want to invest in stainless. If this is your typical garage/basement set up, then you'll be just fine getting the zinc.

My understanding (and I'm no expert) is that zinc plating is as the name suggests steel with a thin zinc plate. the zinc stops the metal rusting, however its easily scratched and if it does get scratched moisture gets through to the steel underneath and can start to rust it. Stainless steal itself is rust resistant and it does not matter if the surface becomes scratched.

Stainless t-nuts seem like a waste of money unless you get stainless bolts to go with them.

Hi mendou,
For your applications zinc plated t-nuts should be just fine.
Stainless steel comes in many different grades and is far more difficult to manufacture than plain old steel with zinc plating. High quality stainless steel which we sell is called austenitic. This type of SS is combined with Chromium and up to 7% Nickel and is highly resistant to corrosion. Ferritic stainless steel which does not stand up to corrosion as well, and is much cheaper has less nickel in it. Nickel prices right now are extremely high since there isn't a whole lot of it to go around.
Long story short: Cost of Manufacturing + Cost of Nickel = Expensive Stainless Steel.
