Acquaintances, friends, partners, people whom you have known personally who died in climbing related accidents.

Kind of a morbid topic, but it seemed relevant, especially given the rash of injuries and accidents we've had lately come up on the site.

I've had a few, but never been at a serious accident site yet, and hope to never.

I'm one person removed from 6 fatal accidents off the top my head. I've however never known anyone who's died while climbing.

Your poll is biased. I have known zero people who have died climbing but I cannot vote for zero! Your results will not be accurate.

2, but they were technically mountaineering. Beware, those of you who scoff at Oregon's "small" mountains.

way too many. two in the valley. most of the others in the mountains. most folks on this site climb in the gym, or local sport crags, or the roadside "trad" cliff.

that means that most folks here don't come into contact with the other side of the sport.

With the utmost respect to mountaineers everywhere, if sticking to cragging means I don't have to bury friends then I'll take it.

You might be disappointed.

That's how my friend died.

One. One too many.

There was also one other (a non-climber) who died in a climbing area from a fall. I didn't know him before that day, but I got to know him during the 4 hours I cared for him before he died there. It affected me just the same as if he had been a climber.

Fortunately, no one on the other end of my rope. I have shared a rope at one time or another with at least 2, and had met a few others that were taken while "climbing". Being in a relatively smallish climbing community/state, one tends to cross paths often with good people who leave early, but in passing doing what they love.

edit: Before I put on rock shoes for the first time, I knew a climber who went in an automobile accident--he was 21 and left a proud legacy around Butte whilst he climbed here.

RIP: Dwight Bishop, Tony Rich, Winston Hough, et al...

2 so far. I hope that number never goes up any further. It's too high already.

Serious injury, even more. Hell, your woman was one of them (Hound Ears a few years back)

Three.

Two died in a mountaneering accident -- fell on the descent from Pico de Orizaba in 1999. Actually, there were three people who died in that accident, but I only knew two of them personally.

One other was a woman I knew only casually. She died in a rapelling accident at the New in 2005.

For some reason I think that I am missing someone else.

I also know of several very serious near-misses that involved massive traumas.

I think that it turned out that the webbing was not actually tied together on the tree; all the info is on this site somewhere.

I put three; Shelley was one of them, although I only climbed with her for a couple days.

My friend Jimmy from Dallas also died soloing in Mexico a couple years ago, and one of my very early climbing acquaintances when I was 19 died in the Wind Rivers after a rope got stuck rapping from a multipitch and he opted just to leave it and downclimb 200 feet of 5.4.

And yes, I suppose I should have put an option for "0," so we could see how many people on this site have not lost anyone.

Actually, I wrote and posted a very complete analysis of that accident. A simple search would have found it for you.

One - the guy who taught / introduced me to climbing died while rapping off a route in either France or Switzerland about three years ago. Never got a chance to take him climbing after I developed as a climber when I left grad school.
