That's the first I've heard that it was definitely climbing. The Boulder newspaper continues to report the cause as unknown. Not sure if he was or was not climbing. Regardless of the cause, it's sad. Someone lost a son, a friend, a dad, a brother and/or a husband. Here is today's story regarding this event: BOULDER -- A man has been found dead amid the Flatirons rock formations west of Boulder, but the coroner says no foul play is suspected. Authorities identified the man Sunday as 47-year-old Edward J. Thompson of Aurora. The cause of death hasn't been determined. A hiker reported the body at about 4 p.m. Saturday in a gully between two of the towering Flatirons, which are popular with climbers and hikers. Boulder County sheriff's deputies are investigating. Sheriff's spokeswoman Sue Cullen says no climbing gear was found with the body but investigators haven't ruled out the possibility that Thompson had been climbing.

I was there shortly before as well. Happy I wasn't the one to find him either. Very very sad situation.

My wife and I climbed the 2nd that morning/afternoon, then headed west to the Sunset Flatironette. Around 5:30 on that climb we saw the rescue crew behind the 2nd Flatiron. It looked like they were below the South Block -- not really between the 2nd and 3rd as has been reported, but on the backside of the 2nd. A news helicopter circled overhead for a few minutes, making belay communication difficult. Not until back at Chautauqua did we learn from a news crew that someone had died. To his friends and family -- very sorry for your loss.

Used to run up unroped for a buddy's birthday solo... got to be a yearly tradition. The fact that it was curtains if you didn't stay pretty much on your game, even in such relatively easy territory, was always right there at the back of your mind. My condolences as well.
