Are there any deaf climbers on here?
My wife is an interpreter and will be teaching at a summer camp, one of the classes will be on rock climbing and repelling. We need to know the signals that are used. Any help would be appreciated.
Also looking for deaf mentors.

i go to a school with a large deaf population. with my limited knowledge of sign language from what i can tell, there aren't a lot of signs for climbing. Most of the time I see interpreters simply miming a climbing motion. Instead of belay commands we teach a thumbs up motion for take, 'r' shake for ready, and thumbs down motion for lower.

One of my partners was legally deaf until and operation but it's only effective to a small degree as long as he wears hearing aids. Without them he's deaf. The aids don't work in the wind and when you sweat. Point being is we climb together, even done a wall. 3 tugs your on belay and climb away. You don't have to yell as it won't do any good. As to teaching you will need to relay the basics as you would any beginner. Remember that a deaf person will be watching everything that you do, so half the teaching will be showing them what's proper.

I have a deaf father and although he doesnt climb i use a lot of signlanguage with my partners like lower is circles down and block is just a fall on the rope cuz there isn't time for signing anything... just be creative that would be enough
Most of the signs that are used have to been thought up at some point, now the signing stick is in your hands. if they are good enough the deaf will use them, or else they will think up something of their own... it's their language after all!
