How come zero isn't an option? I haven't personally known anyone who's died in the 20+ years I've been climbing. I've seen one person suffer from massive head trauma who later died a few weeks later (I learned from a friend who went to college with them). Would you like me to count this one death, or are you just looking to see how many personal acquantances of mine have died?

One more vote for none. I have seen several bad accidents, but never a fatality. I hope to keep it that way, but in this sport thats kind of hard to do.

Jesus that's frightening.
I've watched 1. I've had a friend who decked (and honestly probably should have died) but he was just bruised up. Another friend decked and broke his wrist.

I don't know how to count this up. It could be quite a lot or it could be zero. Like, I had bumped into Derek Hershey and was in the valley the day he fell on Sentinal and died. Does he count? I wouldn't thing so.
I only climbed one weekend with the great climber Dwight Bishop, yet really didn't know him personally - does he count?
I personally saw and got involved with 3 various people who died at Smith Rocks, lowered 2 of them off of Trezlar (they were dead but we didn't know it for both till they got down) and did CPR on one other on Chimney De Chelly as a first responder -we had eaten breakfast that morning at the next table over and had made brief introductions, and were climbing 40 feet away when the fall occurred - didn't know them at all to speak of, do they count?
I was hired to help guide for the company International Climbing Expedition when the 3 founders, all amazing rock-solid expert alpinists, went to K2 in '86. 2 of them died in an avalanche, but I didn't know them and had not met any of them, -do I count them?
Pat and Dave Shermer, good climbers: they were tied together and slid off that cliff on the North face of Hood and Pat died. I went to go see Dave in the hospital afterwards to show support - and as we knew common friends. He recognized me, and greeted my by name, but we really didn't know each other other than by reputation I suppose.
Lots more of those kinds of things. Lots and lots. So it may be between zero and 20+ I bet depending on how it gets counted.

I haven't known any fatalities, but I have had two friends have "near " misses in the last year.
One was due to rockfall to the head and another was a refrigerator size block pin a friend by the leg out near Lumpy Ridge. He just started climbing again but has a gruesome scar.

I didn't vote. Why is there not a 0 on the vote, it starts at 1.
I've not known anyone to die from climbing. I was almost to the top of a route at Octopus garden last year when someone died from a fall within that same area, I didn't see it, except to see him lifted by the helicopter and I could tell it wasn't good from all I could see, but I didn't know him.

Zero, but that wasn't a poll option. I have assisted in an accident rescue. He (some kid further down the crag) was hospitalized for a while. I found out later that he had a brain anurism (sp?) prior to climbing which had affected his judgement, he only placed one piece on a top rope anchor and was rappeling and the piece failed. It was crazy, but he lived.

that means that most folks here don't come into contact with the other side of the sport.
With the utmost respect to mountaineers everywhere, if sticking to cragging means I don't have to bury friends then I'll take it.

That's no guarantee.

Agreed. I think we can all agree it does improve the odds though.

Two... who died in an avalanche near Mt Cook the first year I started climbing. They were roped together in a team of three. Another friend, the third in the rope team, was buried for 45 minutes before they found them... he was alive and relatively uninjured, despite severe hypothermia and frost nip.
...since then I've just been on the scene of a fair few climbing and mountaineering accidents... all people I didn't know but a few that I had conversed with not long prior...
