Usually there are several "correct" ways to do a thing. It's simple, it's safe, and relatively quick. Certainly there is no black and white answer but these correct methods will all work. Then there are the "somewhat correct" or "somewhat incorrect" ideas. These are usually just poorly thought out ideas that while not exactly dangerous do nothing to help. Basically these ideas make you slow, cause you to drop gear, get in clusterfucks, and ultimately finish your climb at night or in a rain storm. Survivable sure, but there is a better way. Lets not forget the wrong ideas. The most wrong ideas will kill you right off. Usually though, it's not that. It's a wrong idea coupled with some bad luck or paired with other wrong ideas. An injury or fatality is likely here. We've all seen posts where this would happen if we followed the advice. Finally, there is sarcasm. Wholly incorrect information that is there to be funny. As long as you detect the sarcasm, it's funny. I doubt that a few sarcastic remarks cause real accidents. I hope not anyway. So the idea of moderating both users and ideas that are blatently unsafe has come up before. Do we limit it to the beginners forum where the chance of a donny seeing it is the most likely. Do we timeout certain users who just cannot get past their own ego on an issue? Do we eliminate the ability to post directly to a beginners forum and have the mods move appropriate threads into the forum? Or do we turn the Beginners forum blue and shitcan everything dangerous that comes up. Does this then prevent people from learning from others' mistakes? Where does this leave all the "first shoe" "my first 5.6" and "new here" posts. Surely there's a place but if beginners got all blue and serious, it wouldn't be here. Finally, who is to say what is correct and what isn't? The only solution to all of it would be to vote. Imagine if each user was allowed to vote but only once. The posts with the worst votes actually get deleted and those with the best glow green or something. Basically the same as flagging on craigslist. I would only like to see this implemented in the beginner forum. What do you guys think?

I guess how well that would work depends strongly on what the gumby:competent ratio here actually is.

You do make a good point in that some people come to this site to learn about everything from what a good shoe might be, to rather complex issues involving gear function, how theoretical FF's relate to the real world, etc. We do have The Lab, Gear Heads and T&T for that kind of stuff though, so I don't know if the Beginners Forum really needs that kind of treatment as well. One of the nice things about this kind of format is that if someone is wrong, they will get called on it and hopefully enough arguments will be put forward that people can make up their own minds on a topic. I do think accurate information is important but I think places like this have their own value in allowing an open exchange of ideas. If someone wants clear and concise climbing instruction they should buy a book, if they want to debate a point of contention then they should come here. Different job, different tool.

I think it's such a fantastic idea, that I'm already working on putting it in place. Have been since before I gotz teh bloo. It may take a while, though. I'm waiting to see if a forum upgrade from Gossamer will include it. (I know it includes killfiling, which is another thing I really want us to have.) If it doesn't, then we'll move ahead on it anyway. I've been asked before to moderate incorrect information, and I pretty much always refuse, though will post what I think is correct info. You nailed it on the reason why we won't mod that stuff -- who's to say what's what? I have 22 and a half years under my belt with thousands of pitches, but I'm still learning things quite frequently. Though it certainly won't be a magic bullet (no such thing on teh .knob), I think it'll be better than having no option but the flamethrower. Stay tuned.

I just re-read the moderation policy, if you were to moderate the beginner forum according to policy, that would not seem to bring up the issue of if the information is correct or not, but only to keep the conversation on topic. Would not this not serve to allow the great minds on this site to disseminate accurate information unimpeded? You would not have to "moderate incorrect information" but only the tone of the debate? Here's part of it: http://www.rockclimbing.com/...r%20Central;#2009806 Fixt clicky. Damn n00B!!!111 Benevolent Overlord.
