This one is done with silk thread. My preferred material is 6lb. FireLine, which is just like fishing line, strong and easy to work with because it's flexible. I don't usually use the wire stuff because I prefer a stronger, sewn and creative clasp to barrels and that sort of thing. Their prettier and don't come undone very easily.

You know wonderwoman you may want to look at using musky line (strong stiff fishing line).
A local jeweler uses the stuff to create necklaces of beads and small polished stone. I had the jeweler make me a necklace out of a #3 BD stopper that wound up holding me on a rather large fall. The stopper was in good shape but the cable was frayed.
By the way, I was only charged $35. Granted my necklace only consists of the stopper, a nickel size stone, eight beads, and a simple clasp.

Thanks for the tip and ideas! Your necklace sounds like a pretty cool memento. It's probably a lot less labor intensive than the one that I made here.

Ooohhh! A Nutlace! I like it!
No climber boy fashion yet. Although I did make my husband an anniversary necklace with a Thai coin because that's where we went for our honeymoon. It's pretty cool looking and simple to make.
Maybe I'll have to start working on a 'guy' line.

Barry, the guy who owns Horseshoe Canyon Ranch, used to sport an accessory cord necklace with a small nut on it. I'm not a necklace kind of guy generally, but I really liked his.

I was actually going to suggest small threaded hexes as another option. It would be a lot more work, but larger hexes could be used if you chop them, file smooth, and drill holes for threading.
