On the Ebay note: Would any of you guys/gals buy gear through Ebay? What kinds of gear would you feel safe in trusting, what would you not? Thanks, Rob

Buying gear of ebay is suicide. You've got no idea where that stuff has been. I bought (or traded my car for ) my trad rack used, but from a close friend. I know the entire history of the gear including which peices had been fallen on. Isn't there some kinda of liability issue with selling used gear on ebay? - charlie

Maybe all the climbers are good people and woudln't sell something they don't trust. This being said, I don't advise anyone to buy used gear, except for shoes, chalk bags and other non-safety stuff. Ropes and slings are out of the question.

I've bought on E-bay. You are really taking a crap shoot. Some (not all) is suspect. Know your gear prior. Wired nuts will show wear, but things like tri-cams you never know.

I bought webbing on ebay, but it was actually from an online store that was using ebay to sell stuff, so it was brand new. I personally wouldn't buy stuff from ebay unless I'm gauranteed that it's brand new and there is enough evidence to make me believe it. I wouldn't buy used gear.

I've bought quite a bit of gear off ebay, although it has all been brand new w/tags so history really was not a factor! All in all I've saved a lot of money on great gear. Shop smart... woodsE

I bought my shoes off e-bay and they're fine. Not what I would have bought if I'd been in a store trying on a few different pairs, but for about 1/3 of the price, not a bad deal. As for as ropes or pro, no way.

I bought my harness off ebay but it had odviously only been used onces or twice at most just like the seller said. It was in literally like new condition. perhaps I am foolish but I will/have trusted my life to gear from ebay. I also bought 10 BDE Oval biners from the bay. But man at 3 bucks a piece(40% off retail) how could I say no. they had all the right stickers and what not with them, prolly stolen though.

I've been a great proponent of Ebay for years. This also means I've been screwed a few times, too. But the thing is: just know what you're getting into. If I were to buy something like used cams (which I don't think I would) off eBay, I'd make sure there was some kind of contract that money could be refunded after inspection if found wanting. That said, I'd buy new gear off of eBay, no problem. You just have to be savvy about the whole deal.

I am very pickey about the gear I buy new. Let alone buying used gear. If its from a good friend and I know the history of the gear maybe but never would I buy used pro. Non safty stuff maybe. But nothing my life is attached to. I also wouldn't by a rope that has been on display near a window or pro that is displayed near a window. Its my Life and money so its Ok to be picky

Great point Tanner. I never actually thought about buying rope on display in a window! It's probably a little over causious, but you're right. It's your money and your life. Thanks for the advise.

Well I do buy gear from e-bay, just know what your buying. Alot of times on e-bay you can buy new gear from places like gearexpress.com that sells on ebay cheaper then they do on their site. DaggerX

IMHO eBay is a good place to buy gear--if you enjoy the eBay game. You don't save that much, and you can get burned. But dishonest sellers are rare on eBay, because if you as a buyer aren't elated with your purchase, you can leave scorching feedback (deserved or not) and damage the seller's chances of getting decent bids on future auctions. Thus new sellers are risky. That's part of the fun sometimes. Lots of climbers trust most the pro they've fallen on. And I'll bet that most of your gear is currently "used." A close inspection and some common sense (pre-feedback) will show if most hardware is trustable or not. Just be careful not to get sucked into bidding wars :-) Arlen
