does anyone know if there is any bouldering or sport climbing in or near algonquin park. I work there in the summer and i'm just starting to get into climbing.

There's lots of rock around there, an even a fair amount of established ice climbing just to the South and West of the park, but I haven't heard of any established rock climbing (except Bon Echo), and cerainly no sport!
In fact, I'm not even sure what the rules are about climbing in the park itself, but I think you'll at least find some boulders to play around on.

Algonquin is a provincial park and the only provincial park that officially permits climbing is Bon Echo under a Memorandum of Understanding between the park and the Alpine Club. Now there are provincial parks that are nudge nudge wink wink about climbing but my understanding is that Algonquin is not one of those.

for sure no roped climbing, probably no boudlering although i'm sure you can sneak in some DWS on your days off

While enjoying the backcountry I have seen some nice boulders to play on. I am not totally sure about the legality of climbing even Trad in the park.

I do not see anything regarding climbing. I have also checked the Ontario Parks website and have not found a general regulations section.

Geologically, its Canadian Shield, like the Adirondacks and Bon Echo...
Not legal...but there "might" be some clandestine climbing there. One would need to be stealthy.

I have some friends that spend the summers up there too. I know that they have done some roped climbing but it may have been outside the part. They are pilgrimage and they base out of the campground by canoe lake.

My understanding is that people climb on the Sleeping Giant at Sleeping Giant Provincial Park. Is that also sanctioned activity, or under one of those wink wink nudge nudge park activities?

Hey man. Ill tell you where to not to climb in algonquin.
1. dont take a canoe to oxtongue lake, north side of highway 60. paddle north until you hit a rock outcrop on your right. Do not climb to the top of that rock, and make sure you do not see the two hangers for a TR.
2. There are some impressive cliffs on rock lake. You WILL need to belay from your canoe though. There are a few options.
Paddle from the rock lake campsite and head south. The first cliff you will come to is around the first big corner to the right. Must gain the cliff to set a toprope. There is a slick crack in the center of a dihedral. I dubbed the route primetime. Also, right beside the climb, there is a pretty insane cliff jump into the lake for an apres dip.
Further down the lake there is an impressive monster of a cliff, about 120 feet maybe ? you could trad it, or a TR with a top belay. or you can just rapell down into the canoe. but for the love of god, dont jump off of it. Unless you have big kahonas, and little brain.
