Where is the best climbing in PA? I guess that we would have to divide it into the three types of climbing. I would wager that the best bouldering in PA is at Hunter's Rock near State College. I would also guess that the best sport climbing (in my opinion) is Sex Wall (as well as the islands adjecent to it), southern Lancaster County. And then the best trad is Chickies by far. What do you think? Am I full of it or what? I ask basically to find out what you think so that I don't waist my time looking for the crappy climbs when you guys know what's the best!

Iv never been to Chickies but Iv spent alot of time at the Delaware Water Gap and besides being told that the gap is the best over twenty years ago I do believe it would be hard to beat. Ill have to make a real effort to get out to chickies since I hear it so highly recommended. Then I can make an informed opinion on this subject.

I've never been to the Water Gap. I wouldn't doubt that it is pretty sweet. I would think from sheer volume of climbs that it is probably a better place to climb than Chickies. Although if you are within an hour's drive of Chickies, there is absolutely no reason to miss out on it.

I've only climbed at a few places around PA (McConnels Mills, Bear Town, and the Moquanaqua area) and out of those three I'd have to say my favorite is the Moqanaqua area. Not only is it close to my house, but my partner and I spent all summer climbing there (Between the Library, Table Rock and Tilbury we have yet to exlore all of the routes)but it is relatively secluded and you rarely see anyone (unlike the carnaval-esqe atmosphere of of McConnels). I agree with nrudowski,
LETS here it for Mocanaqua. Sure it might not be the BEST in PA, but it offers some awesome sport, trad, and TR. The rock is absolutely incredible and the climbing is beautiful.
No, it's probably not the best, but well worth you time to go check it out before anyone starts complaining...

All areas have their strong points and weak points too. Your probably right about the rock in some of these other areas being of excellent quality in fact I know that the Library is awsome for its rock quality. I like the Delaware Water gap the best for several reasons one is the size of the cliff. If you are looking for multi pitch climbing its the greatest, although the rock is fairly alpine in nature it is very good in several areas, the views are inspiring and the cliff itself has a terribly ominous character to it. If your not a little scared climbing there your probably going to have some trouble. So come on up sometime and Ill show you around.

I did some climbing in Tilbury(sp?) near West Nanticoke, this was a great area, sould be in the DBase.

Two other places that have been recomended to me are Donation Rocks and Bellefonte. I don't really know much about either of the areas. What kind of routes are there? Also, as far as gyms go, are there any in Central PA other than Vertical Reality and the Climbnasium? All info ins greatly appreaciated. Also,the view from the top of Tablerock is probably my favorite out of all of the places I've climbed.

Pa. is a great state for climbing and has produced some great climbers. If you live here you are truely blessed with more rock to climb than many other states. It would be cool if we Pennsylvania climbers could get together sometimes to check out others home areas. We could have a day or two in different areas each time to get to know the areas and their resident climbers. Pa. is a big state with a wide variety of landforms and we should take advantage of it.

All that I know about Bellefonte is that it is a quarry. As far as quarries go, it on the upper percentile of climbing.

Kagunkie...
I belive that is the idea behing the PA climbing coalition: meet other climber, help each other open up access, and have more leverage united over one name. Check it out! They're planning a bouldering comp which sounds awesome, so that they can raise money. It's a great time to be a PA climber. Especially if Gov Stables can get reopened!

I agree with Mocanaqua for sport and trad as for the bouldering it would be a toss up between Francis Keys Dam out in Blakslee or a place called Area 51 out near Blue Mnt ski area. Another place that needs to be mentioned would have to be Bowmenstown. The Deleware Water Gap wouldbe alot better if there wasnt so much lose stuff up there

When you say Bowmanstown, are you referring to Stoney Ridge?
And this Area 51, check on the data base, is that Lehigh Gorge? Or different spot?

Does area 51 sit HIGH above The lehigh river and rt 248 (i think) along the appalachain trail? Thats the lehigh gorge climbing I'm referring to...if not, I'd love to hear about area 51, i have a friend who's a climbing nut and leaves only 5 minutes from Blue mt.

i have really only climbed in the bellefonte quarries & on donation rocks. out of those two bellefonte is definitely the best. it is convenient to pennstate, & offers sport & trad climbing (single pitches). the sheer limestome cliffs off cracks, slabs, & polished faces to challenge. many of the routes in the quarries, probably most, were put up by eric horst & friends. if one is ever in central pa, or travelling through, bellefonte is definitely a crag worth climbing. in fact, i always find myself secretly comparing every other crag to those of the bellefonte quarries.

i boulder in the govenor dick rec. area. in my opinion its one of the best bouldering spots in pa. if your around the lebanon area stop by, you wont be disapointed.

Check the routes section its listed there as far as Lehigh gorge and Lehigh gap. They are two different areas. Lehigh Gorge is a state park near Jim Thirp PA. and Lehigh gap is farther south near the Palmerton/Bowmanstown area. I would like to know where exactly area 51 is I know Blue Mt ski area but dont know the rocks near there. Are they to the east or to the west?

i havent had much time to climb in pa, although i know ill have more as im moving to state college in august. what i do know, however, is that the bouldering at hunters rock is phenominal. there are enough routes there to keep you busy for a year. and though the rock is entirely different, it rivals boulder, co in terms of the quality of routes (in my mind).
