What's the climbing out there like (sport/bouldering), especially round Bozeman? Big Sky Resort? Thanks, Leslie

There is a fair bit up here, it is mostly spread out however. Around Bozeman your going to be looking at Gallatin Canyon lots of Trad, and a fair bit of sport I believe. Go east to Livingston and there is Paradise Valley. Allenspur has quite a bit of sport, then Mill creek, Emigrant creek and others(?) offer quite a bit of trad. Butte has alot of climbing though I dont have much experence there. Of course Billings has the choss sandstone Rimrocks, mostly trad- not really a destination area. There are guide books available for all three of those areas. Check out the local mtn shops (barrel mountaneering or Northern Lights in Bozo, Steepworld or Basecamp in Billings). Im sure some of the locals more familiar with the areas can give you more details.

Thanks, Leslie Iam form bozeman to add on what has been said above rocky canyon has a ton a lot of sport and a few trad routs. about 60+ routs 15 minutes for bozeman. there is also revneue flats about 30 mile away but the climbing is easy and only a few dozen routs. allenspure is one of my favorite places for sport. for trad the gallatin canyon has a ton of 2-3 pitch trad. Butte has a TON of climbing, pretty much from the start of Pipestone Pass, all the way up and over into Butte. There is also a lot of climbing really close to Bozeman. If I remember right there is a pretty good guide to the Bozo stuff. Butte was where I learned to climb, so if you decide to go up there, shoot me a PM. I can give you a pretty good idea where most of the stuff is. Happy Hunting.

stonefox wrote: What's the climbing out there like (sport/bouldering), especially round Bozeman? Big Sky Resort? Thanks, Leslie Some good suggestions here. As for sport (around Bozeman); Bozeman Pass, Chestnut Mountain, Natural Bridge (all of those are limestone) and Gallatin Canyon (gneiss!) are the best bets for the highest quality and hardest lines. As for bouldering, Bozeman is lacking a bit on concentration and access. Though 45-65 minutes west is the pipestone/homestake pass which has a massive amount of bouldering/potential. Really good for winter bouldering, believe it or not... One established/published area withing the Homestake/Pipestone pass is Whiskey Gulch, about 300 problems ranging from V0 to V12: http://whiskeygulch.50webs.com/home.htm Lots of areas like Whiskey that are currently in development...check out recent activity(and LOTS of pictures) on the backwaters blog: http://boulderbatholith.blogspot.com/ project in the Druthers Cheers, Tom
