As a carpender I have kept busy, but not so much as in the past. Probly went from 50+ hrs / weeek down to around 25-30. leaves lots of room for climbing! Tighten the belt, live cheap, climb LOTS more. I am enjoying this actually. It scares me, but I'm enjoying it. I have a huge freaking garden in the works, deep freezers and shelfs and shelfs of canning jars. I'm set, time to climb.

Canceled a trip, saving up for a new one to Vietnam (expensive to fly, cheap when you get there). I needed the extra gym time to train, anyway.

Curious, but so far it appears that nobody in this thread has a family to take into consideration with the downturn in the economy. Why? Cheers, Rob.calm

Cheers, Rob.calm I most certainly have family to consider. I mentioned that my wife had to give her blessing to let her hubby(me) live in the dirt for a few weeks next month. My parents are retired but I do some things to help them get along, but the snow has slowed here and their lawn will not need mowed anytime in the next month. My grandkids here will not starve as we are meat eaters living on the edge of the largest piece of uninhabited land in the lower 48. The two other children and the two other grandchildren will most likely end up on my doorstep should it get tighter for them anyhow. See no reason to worry about it, for worry is like riding the dimestore pony, "It gives you something to do, but in the end you got absolutely nowhere". Bob

Since the new "bad economy" trend of the presidential election alot of people have been scared /very unapt to voting for the fire department levys in my district = job cuts/hours cut, which gives me more time to climb but i had to renew my gym membership to a 3 month membership instead of annual membership.. No drastic change in climbing as a whole though.

You make it sound like as soon as it becomes fashionable to be flush with cash gets picked up on by a few movers and shakers the rest of the sheeple will follow! I saw on a news thing a few days ago that unemployment in the US is the highest since they began collecting data. And also that the length of time people are out of work is longer too. I just feel like it wasn't given alot of media attention until the election race.

I think the admin tried desperately to hide what was going on for as long as possible. You know...sort of like the bank robber tries not to tip anyone off before they're about to nab the cash?

Had greatly reduced opportunities to work overtime last year, and the gas prices during the summer kept me from making any trips to crags further than an hour or so away, but My climbing went up that/this year, as the kiddos are both getting a little less dependent. Climbed alone more, due to the reduced range. We're a little less extravagant with our groceries, too.

it affects me greatly. Though I am still climbing a minimum of 3 times a week (unless my poor fingers need a week off), I cannot finish my trad rack like id hoped, and my gf and I are struggling to plan road trips cuz we'd have to drive too far south than our meager budgets allow. We're in a new state, and really cant find decent work. its tough for everyone right now.

Yeah, my husband had to get a job where he actually works more hours than me. That means our after work climbing is seriously cut back. It also means that he won't be able to go away every weekend at the drop of a hat. Things are rough. Seriously though, I could very well loose my job at any time, but life's too short to stress about what could happen at the expense of enjoyment now. Not saying to go wild. We're not big spenders in the first place, and while we don't have a ton of money, the only debt we have is the mortgage.

My wife and I have both been lucky enough to keep our jobs. We've always lived well below our means so it's all good. We were kinda hoping we'd both get axed, our company gives nice packages. Take a year off and travel. Oh well. Problem is, as usual I have plenty of money and no time. How did I become a corporate drone? Working on changing that.......

I've got a BIG birthday coming up (it ends in a zero) and was hoping to go back to Italy to climb in the Dolomites. The original plan was to take the wife (leave the kids at home). Now it's highly doubtful. I have enough frequent flier miles for one ticket, but room, board and transportation are looking farther and farther out of reach. It may be a road trip back to the west (US) now. Oh, and I work for a non-profit. PLEASE give (to Heifer International).

My husband is having a really tough time finding a job. He has a temporary full time job, but a real job in his field, not so much. Fortunately, I make enough for both of us. People are getting a bit skittish at my job. We all are leaning towards taking a bit more hours than hiring a person to replace a partner who is leaving, and that will definately mean less climbing for me. I wish I could say that life is too short and to not worry, but I tend to be a worry wort. Always have been. We might be trying for a baby soon, and that is pretty scary in light of how I make most of the money (and I would be the one pregnant.) Yeah, I should stop worrying.

swaghole wrote: HIGHER_CLIMBER wrote: How has todays economy (or lack of) afected your climbing? Holding out on gear purchases? Shorter trips? No trips? Yep. A few months ago, a discount airline in Canada went bankrupt because of tough market conditions (Zoom - those bastards). I had purchased return tickets for a climbing trip to Scotland to the tune of $1500 for my wife and I. We ended up taking a road trip to New Hampshire, Maine and New Brunswick and climbing at local crags along the way. SUX!!!!!
