Dudes, I've seen people bragging about their awesome Steep and Cheap deals they've nabbed before, so I just wanted to take a minute to make ya'll jealous and spray about my latest gem found on SAC:

The North Face Doubletrack 25 Pack!

Finally! After months of wasting valuable time watching my SAC Firefox add-in tick by with lame deals on stupid crap like cams, harnesses, shoes, ropes, and crampons, all the waiting has paid off!

Now I'm gonna fill my DoubleTrack with all the sweet deals SAC offers on prAna tank tops and manpris.

(Die, Steep and Cheap.)

I am sensing a minor hatred of SAC. I think that it is the best website ever. The only thing that would make it better is if you could buy some of the octumoms kids. Who dosent want a sweet northface rolly bag. that thing is off the hizzy.

No more heavy pack on your back while hiking to the crag I feel ya. Now you can wheel your gear! I've seen little kids with these on their why to school because god forbid those fat kids have to walk with a bag full of books.

It's been maybe 2 years since I've gotten anything on the website.

I still check it pretty regularly.

I did get my softshell there, I've seen some other softshells that interest me too. It's a good source for sunglasses.

Pretty much though, my life wouldn't be any different without it.

If this is your conclusion about what SAC sells, you liez! Wink

I think only once have I seen cams, once have I seen a rope (and it was a 30m glacier travel rope), never have I seen crampons and maybe a couple of harnesses (mostly cheap crappy ones).

From what I've seen, 70-80% of the stuff is clothing and sunglasses... and of the clothing around 70% has been womens clothing.

The best things I've picked up on there have been a camel pack, a pair of trail shoes, a synthetic sleeping bag and a shell jacket.

The only climbing hardwear I've picked up of SAC was a couple of tricams... I think all sizes were 8 bucks... they all went in about 5 minutes.

Every time I've checked that site they were selling out right crap or useless shit like shoes that LOOK LIKE approach shoes (the typical TNF crap in other words).

There's a disproportionate number of climbers checking that site for the amount of climbing gear they sell.

I've gotten a softshell, camelback, and a couple pocket knives. A former roommate also got some knives, a jacket, a helmet, and some sunglasses.

They aren't a gear supplier by any means. Often times the discount is negated by shipping too.

Ding ding! Yes!! Especially if it's just one thing you're getting... which is pretty much always. Not many people buy multiple items unless it's a knife or camel back they can give to a friend or spouse.

I've bought the following:

Mammut Focus Harness $20 (x2 for use when taking never-before climbers toproping, bought today)

Eidelweiss 10.5 Torrent 60m - $80

Marmot Alpinist Shell - $180

CAMP silverstar helmet - $20

Montrail Index Shoes - $23

Montrail Magnet Shoes - $26

Montrail Wasabi Shoes - $26

I thought those were all pretty sweet deals. Particularly the shoes, which fit my wife well and she likes them.

Also, Tramdock.com is a killer site for picking up ski gear. We bought all our DH and AT setup there.

You're right that shipping can kill it though - I was considering a BD crashpad until I saw that it was like $50 to ship.

Sierra Designs Lightning 2 tent for $120, $9 shipping. I have been wanting that tent for about two years now. They sold out in about 5 minutes... mine is on the way.

I have gotten a Marmot windstopper jacket for my girlfriend, two MH tech tees, orikaso dinnerware set, and Montrail backpacking boots, but I agree that there is a ton of crap.

isayautumn,
thanks for putting this out there. I have seen some posts touting sac as a great website for deals on gear and, ever the cheap bastard, find myself checking it often convinced I just missed the great deal on ropes or cams and happened to open the page at the beginning of the sale for the paris hilton looking tofosi glasses. the jig is up, it really is all crap...all the time

You wouldn't say that if you had an XL woman who likes to pretend she's outdoorsy to shop for.

last time I bought something from SAC was in August 2007. I just never see anything I really want or need on there very often, but I still check it occasionally. I was able to get my tri cams on it for $8 a piece and my crashpad for $80 shipped

Does anyone here remember when Sierra Trading Post was a sweet outdoor store with awesome discounts?

Or when you could get gear AND beta at REI?

Another one bites the dust.

Big time. The SAC shipping is fucking outrageous.

That said, they occasionally have some kickass deals on icebreaker stuff lately, and I'm a big fan of saving money on wool clothing that costs 100 bucks a shot.

I love steep and cheap, but I also love whiskey militia so I use cleansnipe.com which links to both and a few others.

I've had some amazing deals. I got some Anon glasses for 85% off, Montrail Wasabi's for $26. I mean these are amazing.

I also like spadout.com, but their are really for different beings.

this is correct. i think sierra trading post has better deals on icebreaker, especially if you search out a coupon on the web

You're all being too harsh. Without SAC, how would we ever learn about all the crappy merchandise Oakley spews out for wanna-be shredders to suck up?

When there was just one item a day on SAC, it was usually great, but it was sold out by the time I checked more often than not. Now there is always something to buy, but a lot of it is total shit.

The way I see it, there used to be one good to great item per day, and I think there still is, you just have to wade through all the total crap and be lucky enough to check what's up for sale when the one good item is up.

I've picked up a few good deals in the past, but I haven't bought anything since 2007.

Backcountry Access Tour System Shovel/Probe $36
5.10 Ascent climbing shoes $65
BD CF Enduro Treking poles $45
Mammut Flash 10.5mm $85
BD Campus Shorts $15
Suunto T1 heart rate monitor $50

AND, it's still a great way to procrastinate, even when it is lame ass, especially now that there are 5 or 6 spin offs to check out. I am currently a big fan of bonktown.com

You can still get good beta from the folks at the REI in Atlanta.

In Michigan, the beta is "move somewhere else," so I haven't bothered asking employees about it.
