I'm not sure I get why these threads were locked?

This is a public couple and their marriage is common public knowledge. They make thier living off these public images they cultivate.

Even I knew they were married and I couldn't care less about either of them, alone or together.

No I don't get it.

Haven't you heard? This is a classy joint dingus, we don't do things like gossip about people we don't know, bicker over petty shit, post half nude pictures of "The Hottest Climbing Chick", or generally degrade one another at every opportunity.

Nope, that's not what we do here.

J_ungiepoo thinks I'm a jack-hole? Well, for the Steph Davis one, anyway. Was there another I can't now be a jack-hole in?

Personally, I find the animosity directed towards this couple to be fascinating.

This seems to make sense to me. So, I'm locking this thread, too.

Maybe the story will show up in the National Climbing Inquirer! Shocked But please leave it out of RC.com.

I moved this thread here. Where it will sumarrily be locked.

J_ung stated why these threads were locked in the Steph thread. Basically, starting rumor about someone's personal life is a bit untasteful.

Thank you mods. I'll go ahead and field the question, though. I thought I pretty much explained it, but I can see a bit more is called for, besides, I have some time to kill before my plane boards.

First off, I have no problem with people discussing any famous climber's climbing exploits, decisions regarding their climbing, ethics, style, what have you. For example, Steph Davis' decision to tickmark whatever she's climbing is fair game. I'm drawing a line at gossip about their personal lives. I do not agree that because they are sponsored climbers we should run their personal lives through the dirt, and nothing will convince me that isn't where those two threads were headed. This site is many things. Some of them are good and some suck donkey balls. One thing it will not be is the National Enquirer of climbing.

That's the long answer. The short answer is: because that's the way I want it.

And just to head off the obvious, it's got nothing to do with "nannyism." It's got everything to do with one tiny step in a slightly classier direction.

You did moderate everybodys' ability to respond in that thread. Anyway, the "?" was used, j_ungerator. I was starting to feel cornered. Thread's getting locked all around me. Enemy closing in. I can see what you're getting at though. Personally, the veracity of the conjecture was inconsequential. As I stated previously, I do find the flak that couple gets interesting and more indicative of the detractors' mindset than anything else. For the record, I could give eight shits about octomom too.

To be fair, he's not starting a rumor.

It's common first hand knowledge among many of the front range crowd that Steph was hanging out in Rifle last summer and making out with a euro dude at the base of the wall. That is fact, sorry I don't have pictures.

I am not going to spread or start rumors on them but don't think for a second that the marriage is flourishing.

I do agree that this stuff would be best left off the site though.

^^ Enough! I don't care if it's true or not. We won't take the liberty of dragging somebody's personal life out and displaying it just because she's a sponsored climber. And ongoing, that applies across the board, whether the person is famous or not.

The rest of you can feel free to discuss whether or not that's a good idea, but on this topic, my mind is not going to change.

I just asked? And thanks for the answer. The only thing I took exception to was the initial handling of THIS thread. Twasn't you though.

In terms of celebrity stalking - me I could not care less about the marital status of this couple or any other celebrites who make their money in large part on their public personas.

But I certainly don't feel a lot of sorrow for their plight - considering HOW this couple specificially and I mean specifically invited people into their world.

But I think you are going to have a hard time setting a consistent example and you are going to have to have a 'good for goose good for gander' approach with your own staff - personal lives are personal lives and now I guess all such comments are off limits.

That's gonna be tough.

But gossip bullshit, yeah, I get that.

One other comment - angry's observation from Rifle: see this is the sort of conundrum censors always face: that post is TOTALLY climbing related. 100%, and yet you feel its out of bounds.

That's awkward.

Making out with some Euro dude is climbing related?

But, I get your point. It can be a slippery slope. In angry's post's case, that's the biggest reason why I stopped shy of pressing any special mod buttons.

Absolutely, of course it is.

Say for example I walk up to Table Mtn for some sport wankin. I get to the base and I see local hard dude X and X is there with local hardwoman G. X and G are married, each to someone else.

"So I went to Table Mtn yesterday. I was leading "Dependz", when I looked down I saw X and G necking."

Totally climbing related. Which is sorta how angry classified it the FIRST TIME he posted that observation.

Anyway.... I couldn't care less about the couple in question.X and G on the other hand, are cool people.

Cheers

Is there a line? And where is it?

Can I start a thread stating that Tommy Caldwell lost his finger by sticking it through a bolt hanger and falling?

It's a blatant lie and put forth intentionally to start a rumor, yet, it's not about his private life.

What about positive comments? We give the couples here all sorts of non-climbing grief just because they're couples all the time. Is that also unacceptable?

How about if someone busts off a string of epic free solo's because things are on the rocks with his girlfriend. Can we talk about the solo's but not the reason behind them?

I see what you're trying to do but I just don't see it working out too well.
