Why am I laughing so hard...?

[small]"I have access to a good amount of black-board chalk..."[/small]

We climbers are cheap-asses, huh? I'm certainly not ragging on the question. It's just FUNNY.

[small]I have access to a good amount of ziplock bags...I use 'em for chalk bags. $3.95 for 50![/small]

Climbing chalk has been scientifically proven to increase your grip on the rock, because it shows you where all the best holds are.

Thanx Curt, that explains it well.

Today I was helping out a friend who is doing some renovations, and we were removing a lot of bricks. The pulverised mortar was really drying out my hands, and this got me to thinking about lime.
Lime really dries your skin out. It just grabs hold of moisture, hence the term 'dryer than a limeburner's boot.'

So anyhoo, I got to thinking that maybe a little lime mixed in with your chalk ( not a great deal ) might dry out your fingers even more....Does this sound crazy? Has anyone else thought about this?
The drawback that I can see is that you may end up with cracked hands because they may get too dry, but if you just used it on really hard climbs where sweat was a problem....

Crazy as a coconut, or genius?

you are..... crazy as a cocunut! - lime is caustic to your skin and especially dangerous to your eyes. can you imagine getting lime dust in your eyes while climbing? stick with the proven (and thankfully inert) carbonate of magnesium.

Adam,

I am not sure, but it might work OK. You would want to make sure that you were using a small amount of calcium oxide in the chalk rather than calcium hydroxide. Both are generically called "lime" but the former compound, CaO, is the one that is used as a dessicant (drying agent). This is due to the fact that, unlike the hydroxide, CaO has an affinity for water because it contains none initially.

The risk would be some irritation of your skin, but if you added just a bit of CaO, who knows? If you have been working with cement all day, as you indicated, you were probably exposed to more lime than if you climbed all day with a few percent lime mixed into your magnesium carbonate. If you actually do the experiment, please let me know how it works out.

Curt

Good point nifeedge, (is that knife edge, of niff eej? ) if I do try it, I'll be careful of the peepers.

Curt, it was just a thought, but it might be worth a try.
The other thing to consider is the effect on perishable equipment like harness and rope I guess. The more I think about it, the more I am thinking "crazy as a coconut."
But I'll keep you posted.

i asked this same question a few months ago because i didn't know any better then..

yup, i used blackboard chalk for climbing when i was starting cause i was too scared of looking stupid for asking.

when i got to use the real stuff, I got to see the big difference. blackboard chalk may keep your hands dry but dude, they make the holds so damn slippery!

someone replied to my post then
stick to the sweetness!

I tried the whole idea of using classroom chalk......and it didn't work at all...and you have to steal a lot of chalk to get enough anyways.
