He was loved by many while many tried their skills on his routes. He was a father, a badass climber, and an intellectual.
He was a real man. At 67 he continued to do routes that others thought too runout.
Woody was a respected man. Not just for his climbing FA's in Josh (Double Cross), but he was more respected in my world for his insights into history and American culture. He was a history teacher and well-read man of the world.
We lost an American hero. He should be praised.

Everything I've read makes it clear that Woody was a real climbers climber and a great humanbeing. A clearly devastating loss.

I bet I have done most (if not all) of Woody's classics in JT. Although I didn't know Woody personally, it is clear that the climbing community has suffered a tremendous loss. My condolences and best wishes to all of his friends and family members.

I'm looking forward to giving Woody a personal memorial on my next trip to Jtree. Maybe I'll just take a moment over in the section of Afpa Rock where I spent an afternoon climbing with him and Locker. Man - those two, together, were hilarious. Woody as the straight man to Locker's constant silliness.
Though I only met Woody a few times, each time stands out quite memorably. He had a quite demeanor, but he was NOT a quiet presence. He had a rock solid personality, opinions and deeply held convictions. He was as loyal to those ideals as he was to those he cared for. Fully committed.
His spirit will live forever in Joshua Tree. Climb On, Woody.

Unfortunately, I never met Woody. However, even I feel like I have lost something. He was obviously a great friend, and climber to many. I pray his family, friends, and partners are able to enjoy his spirits in everything they do.

I never met Woody but I had once heard stories about his courage and cool nerves while climbing.

Here is one more voice to the condolences to his friends and family. Some of his routes have been on my ticklist for a while and he will clearly be missed by not just those who knew him, but by his family and friends.

A bit of thread drift has been going on, I would just like to comment again on how strongly influenced I was by Woody, not the climber, but the person. His character and attitude were flawless, and I have a lot to learn from the unquestionable honesty he possessed.
I can't wait to climb in Joshua Tree again, it is such a beautiful place. Woody was blessed to spend time there with good (WONDERFUL) people. Maybe I'll make some friends there too!

Today being the one-week anniversary of Woody's death, it is surely a difficult day for his family and loved ones. Hoping that sweet memories of their times with him are able to be of comfort and help ease the sadness.

Although I havent had the pleasure of meeting him I offer my condolences to friends, family, and all affected by such a great loss.
He sure as hek lived to the fullest, If we were all so fortunate to have a mentor/partner with these qualities.

My sincere condolences to Woody's family. I never met him although I wish I had and will think of him when I return to J Tree.
I definitely enjoyed his routes and through that I shared his excitement for this way of life. I'll pray that his loved ones find peace in his passing.

We climbed Tahquitz and J Tree together and had some great days.
I thought of him as a great warrior poet, and always thought we would climb together again. How sad.
