We are travelling to Mexico next week for a climbing trip (to El Portero Chico) from the USA. We have medical insurance at work, but think this only covers us within the US. I know the answer is "Don't fall" but does anyone take out separate insurance for such trips? We are looking at a company called ihi Bupa, which appears to cover "hazardous sports" at a reasonable rate.
Any advice would be very welcome! Thanks.

You should double check to see if your current insurance will cover you. Most of them will--although if you get hurt you will have to pay the local hospital and then get re-imbursed after you get home.

If you are looking for an additional insurance policy that will cover "hazardous" sports, Travel Guard has an Adventure plan. This covers mountaineering up to 4500m, and will also cover equipment loss, and emergency evacuation.

I didn't even think of insurance when I went there, and we did one of the longest climbs there that you could do. Wear a helmet and climb safe, you don't need insurance, spend it on beer and tacos. Climb on!

Wowsa! ...gonna be getting pretty hot now!
I booked my flight through an adventure travel company to potrero who had a good deal on adverture insurance which covered medical and modest gear loss.
Was only about 50 bucks CAD. IMO completely worth it considering the rock fall hazard....even if you get a small cut that need three stickes.. not sure you'd wanna pay what they want you to for it..best to cover your base and get insurance..most travel booking stores have somethign like this to offer!

The American Alpine Club also has insurance for members and would be advisable. Call your current local provider and check to see what they would cover. Insurance is always prudent. But, climb safe, stay on route and wear a helmet.

did you even try to do a search? Even if you didn't find an answer, you could have simply added to an existing thread, rather than create a new one (and therefore more garbage that will show up when some does try to search).

That's a nice reply, thank you. No I did not search, on RC.com, but we searched under insurance and I was also asking if anyone had used the company we did propose. There would be essentially no new posts ever again on RC.com if everyone searched for what had been done before, and didn't re-post, how many other repeat threads are there?
Thansk to everyone else for the helpful suggestions. In the UK (where we lived til recently) we had annual insurance with BMC (British Mountaineering Council) and I wondered if there was something similar in US. A few of the suggestions above are helpful and we'll probably think about an annual policy with one.

You do realize that this is mexico right? Even if you get hurt it will probably cost less to just pay the hospital bills than it would cost to get the insurance (I lived in mexico for 2 years).

I think the medical insurance you are having, would be useful for you in the specified case too. Check it once whether it covers or not and then take a decision on the same. Have a nice trip. Good luck.
