Last fall I had a TON of gear stolen out of my car while parked at the North Side of Looking Glass in NC. I figured it was a total loss and that I would never see it again. Amazingly I got a call from the Special Agents in the Pisgah Ranger District telling me that they caught the guy and got some of my stuff back! He has been traveling and breaking into vehicles for the last two years traveling coast to coast living out of his van. He used climbing guidebooks to scout locations for car break ins. Fortunately this guy is going away for a long time and some peace can return to NC climbing sites (he decided to settle in here).

Congrats! But I'd be careful with the gear (assuming you got life supporting gear back)... never know what its been through. It's nice seeing one of these guys caught, I've heard of some break in near local rock.

Unfortunately he wasn't a climber so he just sold that stuff. He thought my crash pad was a giant sleeping mat so I am getting that back along with some other things, but yeah, getting gear back would be sketchy. He might be the same person that was causing your break ins. Two weeks ago he was up in Harrisonburg PA. He has family up in NY so it's part of his loop.

He's not a climber. He is more of a hiker/bicycle/techy computer guy.

What a dick. Couldn't he have gotten a guide to yachting locations or a map of the Hamptons instead?

I remember hearing about this when it all happened. Psyched to hear justice being administered. You must feel a bit better. ...Really glad to hear Pisgah Rangers are taking these situations seriously.

Yes I did. I reported it to the local PD who told me not to expect to ever see any of it again. Fortunately they passed the info on to the Pisgah Rangers and they were on top of it. They also let me know that Transylvania County was extremely supportive in the investigation and that normally if you don't live in the county you got broken in at, the case just gets filed away and forgotten about (I am from Buncombe county and the break in happened in Transylvania county).

Being someone who has had gear stolen from them, it's nice to hear you had a happy ending. I've done some shitty stuff, but stealing is NOT cool.

I haven't been able to find a writeup - has anyone seen one? About 2 years ago we had a dude (early to mid 20's, maybe) come through the climbing gym in Roanoke, VA selling a set of virtually unused second generatioin camalots and a full set of nuts. He seemed knowledgeable about the gear ("I just bought the newer camalots and won't use these"), but didn't want to climb. It seemed a little fishy at the time, and it is on the route from Brevard to Harrisonburg... I bet I could still pick him out of a lineup.

A big cellmate named Bubba if REAL justice was being administered he wouldn't have a cellmate named Bubba, rather he would be working under supervision at climbing areas, fixing trails, cleaning chalk, picking up litter, cleaning out latrines. Dude needs to pay BACK to the CLIMBING community.

YUP You got me. Now I have popsted bond and I think I will break more glass than eva. If anyone needs something special I will steal it for you for 1/2 the price at REI. I am going to be breaking into cars around Georgia for a few months so go climb in Alabama or Tennessee. You should be safe there. BTW this is a ruse just a ruse and will only be a ruse to get the crags in GA to myself

Good that he was arrested and that you tgot some of your stuff back. Be careful of any soft goods though. Still sucks that some asshole would do that. They should let climbers who have had their gear stolen administer the justice with wired hexes.
