I was leading a trad route at Stover (near Tales from the Crypt) and was about 40ft up, when suddenly there was this was powerful whack on my head. At first I thought a rock had fallen or that a tourist tossed something. I held on (was above my last piece). I never saw it, but my belayer did, she said it came rocketing out of the sky for direct hit. It hit my helmet incredibly violently!!! The reason for the assault is unknown, no nest was nearby. I quickly got another piece in, in the belief a second attack was eminent. I surmise it got hurt in the attack too, as it never came back. My left arm is also bruised. That was the arm I was holding on with and was raised up next to my helmet.
=I have 5 talon marks on the nape of my neck, behind my ear and on my scalp. The claw must have swept up under my helmet at the time of impact. Bled a little and had a headache for the rest of the evening.
Anyone else ever suffer a raptor attack?

Wow...
I've been buzzed before by a raptor but not hit. I have been struck in the back before by a smaller bird of unknown origin but not anything like your experience.

You had no business climbing over there nor should you report your incident. You are lucky that some nature loving ranger did not write up a ticket for disturbing the wildlife.

What the F are you talking about? This is a commonly climbed area. This particular climb is within 10ft of one the most popular 11's at the park.
I disturbed nothing. There was/is no nest anywhere near these climbs...or anywhere on the whole cliff. The attack was unprovoked. No warning was issued by the bird at any time. I've climbed this same route not even a month ago.
So next time, know what you are talking about before shooting your mouth @$$shat.

so you are saying that this F16 just took a dive to kill up there and you were not in his territory ?

JAG,
Thanks for the post. A lot more interesting than most things reported on such as accidents involving falling or having gear dropped on you. or even snake bites.
Hope you heal up quickly. I also was wondering about the color of your helmet and am curious as to what the scratches look like.
And, of course, ignore the peanut gallery flaming.

Are you sure it was a Hawk? I would have to say I dont really beleive your story either, but, if you were at Stover, the most common bird there is a Turkey Vulture. A Turkey Vulture is not a Hawk or a Raptor, and if one flew into you, I find it hard to beleive you did not see it, since they are rather large.

As to the OP, holy shit!  They breed hawks pretty big over your way, so that must have been quite a knock. Good job holding on!

Yes, that was my inclanation too. But my belayer saw it land in a tree afterwards and got a good look at it.
It was wierd. No nest of anykind within sight.

we had cell phone cameras but no pics. Shallow lacerations and punctures. Was the talk at work though..."that crazy Jeff dude."
The five marks span an area about 4-5" in diameter.
