It seems like you signed up for this site with an agenda. Specifically, to warn us all of the dangers of climbing and marijuana use. Why don't you do a search. This topic has been covered extensively. It's probably second only to "What shoe should I get". The fact that you're coming on here calling yourself "old trad" then telling people how stupid they are for smoking weed and climbing is laughable at best. It outs your very ignorance on history of climbing, "old trad" for sure. One last thing to ponder. I don't smoke weed and I haven't for a long time, not only would I pass a UA, you can test my hair. I don't climb stoned and none of my partners do either. So in practice, I'm in complete alignment with your ideas. I still think you're full of shit.

Wow. You must be a very good climber to be able to climb stoned! Are you one of the Stone Masters of the 70s? Probably not. You're an idiot!

Sort of similar to getting into a car when you already have one too many. 59old_troll - I don't have the statistics (Majid might) but I'd bet that >90% of climbers who get themselves into bad situations are entirely sober. And judging by the comments in this thread, far more than 10% of climbers climb stoned. Applying simple logic, one reaches the conclusion that it is more stupid to climb sober than stoned (a conclusion that I reached myself many years ago).

Risk is a funny thing to calculate. Cigarette smokers figure that smoking won't kill them, because none of the cigarettes they smoked so far have killed them. But risk compounds upon itself in funny ways. All of us have some risk of an epic failure on any climbing trip. If you're a fucking idiot, your risk is higher than if you're clever minded. If you're a beginner, your risk is higher than if you're well-experienced. If you're unprepared, your risk is higher than if you are prepared. If you take mind-altering substances that change your ability to reason, your risk is higher than if you are sober. But risks are funny because they aren't generally cumulative, in fact they tend to be interactive and compound on themselves. The entirety of any calculation of "risk" tends to be greater than the sum of its parts, even multiplicative. Inexperienced, beginner, unprepared fucking idiots should not be compounding their risk by getting high before climbing. However, experienced, prepared, clever climbers also increase their risk by altering their thinking ability with drugs before climbing. They don't increase their risk as much as the group above, puff for puff. However, to deny that you increase their risk by taking substances is to be suddenly placing yourself in the "fucking idiot" category and increasing your own risk dramatically... you fucking idiot. Is there an historical record of climbers that have gotten high, climbed, and survived? You bet. But just remember that last cigarette that didn't kill you and don't fall prey to a simple thinking error. Climbing is all about calculated risk. It's when we confuse what is and isn't a risk that we mess up.
