I'm about to do a route that supposedly requires two full sets of hooks, which to me means two each of: 1. pointed leepers 2. sharpened skyhooks 3. regular skyhooks 4. grappling hooks 5. micro cam hooks 6. narrow cam hooks 7. wide cam hooks. In sum, that's 14 hooks, which just seems like too many. I'm thinking of ways to trim down and reduce clutter. Perhaps I'll trim one "set" down to only #2, #4, and #6, and keep the other complete. Or perhaps I'll sling #1-4 together, and #5-7 together so I don't have 7 separate slings on each 'biner. I don't know. Maybe I'll just carry everything in a big tangled mess. Any recommendations?

I pretty much go with pmyches suggestion, except I'm not a fan of Talons. In 30 or so walls I think I've used mine once. I still carry one, but I prefer the old Leeper pointed bat hooks. Also I like the big Pika hooks.

Form racking them, if I'm carrying a lot and going to be doing a lot of hooking, I'll split them up and keep them on a tied loop attached to each biner on my aiders. If I only need a few, I'll keep a couple right on my aider biners and rotate them around for use as needed.

I have "2 of everything" (of every kind of hook I have that is) I sling a 1 copy of each on a biner. Then, It's like I have two identical key sets.

Interesting, because duplication is exactly what I don't want. I figure I should have two small, two medium and two big hooks, but I'd prefer if none if these were the same. Ultimately, I've decided to make one set with a talon, pointed cliffhanger, flat grappling hook, micro and narrow cam hooks. The second set will have a pointed leeper, flat cliffhanger, pointed grappling, narrow and wide cam hooks. If I could find where to buy a giant FISH or PIKA hook, I'd get one of those. Anyone know who has 'em?

Anyone know who has 'em? There are times where you need to do two hook moves in a row using the same type of hook. You can't always use a flat grappling on one move and the net be a pointed grappling. Also there are times that you want the same size cam hook move after move. If the route says to take 2 of all hooks I usually take 2 each of the BD hooks (talon, cliffhanger, grappling), 1 each pointed cliffhanger and grappling, 2 narrow and 2 wide cam hooks. I mix it up between the big hooks, I have a old fish hook, a new fish ring angle and 1 of the big Verm hooks. As far as big hooks go, I know the Mountain Shop in Yos is out of the big Verm hook and he's not making them anymore. As far as I know Russ is only making the Ring Angle Fish hook. It's not on ebay right now but I think Russ is out of the office for a while. I thought Pika was out of biz, but I guess not after seeing the earlier post. Everyone has their own method of doing things. Pick what works god for you. If your cool only bringing 1 type of each hook, then go for it. The only thing about what your thinking about taking is that the micro cam hook and the pointed leeper hook aren't used much. I hope this helps Zac

The #5 Vermin hook is the total shizz. Light, strong and well made. It's about size of Fishs Ring Angle Claw Hook. I'm wondering if you can post here or on Supertopo.com and ask for advice that is specific to your route. Someone must have been up whatever route it is recently and can give you advice.

pmyche wrote: bc, they look cool; really stable. Do you ever feel like that piece is too wide at the tip? PS: Say no to superbeta. Tool up and send. Tell us how much better the ascent was with some problem solving and adventure rather than with play-by-play descriptions of every pitch's crux. Pmyche, yes they are. I guess there are 14 different Vermin Hooks made, but it's really 7 and they come wide (like the Yos shop) or narrow. I had one skid off a placement that I know would have been bomber had it been a sharpened hook, so I'll sharpen some as I have a possible hook route/few bolt FA lurking in the back of my mind. On the 2nd part, normally, I totally agree with that sediment, but no one wants to haul extra, totally worthless yet heavy crap on a big wall (if that's what the route is in this example).
