I haven't taken it out yet. When I do it will probably be the end not damaged. The damaged end will probably be turned into a rug or picture frame.

Or, maybe better, sent to The Lab for testing, one way or another.

So, we heard several posters complain of extraordinary degradation
of Petzl ropes (only Zephyr, was it?), many returning them to points
of sale (or directly to P.),
and, yet a year or so later, we are none the wiser about this?

Haven't heard anything for a while about unusual rope behavior. Maybe this was a batch specific problem? Poor QC?

I just stumbled upon this thread, and read the whole thing. I bought a Zephyr from MEC, in Vancouver, about 6 months ago, seen moderate use, seems fine. I've never heard of an issue with these ropes. But, if this was first brought to light a year and a half ago, I would like to think the issue was resolved. Crazy

But, my question is the only pics shown on here are of a red Zephyr. But mine is blue... ? Is this the "newer" updated design?

I neglected the fairly-early-in-this-thread Petzel response,
and hearsay that they responded to another that there was
some sheath-weave problem with a batch. One person reported
a problem with the Nomad, all others IIRC were re Zephyr.
But what a list (just of those responding here @RC.com):

[beware misspellings]-:

phlsphr (OP of 1st thread)
campo (fuzz)
localshredder
shear (**3** ropes @6m point, 2 w/core shots: 1st Prize!)
hsvclimber
tiamzano
chickenbm (wear @rap.knot)
-------------
jeff_m (2nd OP)
auegma
j_ung
crankingclimber (Nomad)
chossmonkey ("our friend Neil's...")
caughtinside ("a friend, ... she")
kernha1
WVUCLIMBR

Problem noted to Petzl circa spring '07; ropes reaching P. by 10/07
(and thereafter). So, we're about at the year+half point post-problem.

Hmmmmm ...

As you noted, the ropes of issue seem to have been mostly of a different
color (and batch?), and all but one a Zephyr. Also, they exhibited the
appalling damage after relatively little usage.
.:. So, given that you have used your rope, which is differently colored,
for some period w/o anything untoward occurring, I imagine that you are
with a safe, correctly constructed rope.

I purchased a 50 m Petzl Zephyr a week ago. I was not aware of any issues with this model until reading the forum today (a friend informed me). After reading many of the users comments I would not have bought this rope.

HOWEVER, since I do own it and know its complete history, I'll document how the rope weathers the next few weeks.

For the record:

Color: Light Blue, Dark Blue, Yellow Sheath
Length: 50 m
Lot #: 253755 (im guessing this is the batch?)
Days used for climbing as of this post: 2

So far the sheath remains in mint condition after two days worth of sport/trad climbing with zero falls and a few raps. I'll repost after ~10 days use (since that seems to be when the problems begin to show).

I'm hoping the blue sheath Zephyrs hold up fine.

I have a blue zefurr I got late last year that is turning into a fuzzy mess after around ten days. Ugh. I usually run dry ropes because they stay cleaner in the dust and feed smoother, but this thing is a dirty mess. I'm sending it back to back to petzl to see what they say...

I did just read this whole thread. Part of my interest is I have a (orange) Petzl Zephyr.

I have not used it a whole lot. I can only remember 4 days of top roping. I probably bought it a year ago. (getting back into climbing has been slow w/o a partner)

My concern is now that I am looking forward to lead climbing I just don't want to have any doubt whatsoever in my rope. It is one of the few pieces of gear that isn't redundant, and even if it doesn't drop me I wouldn't like to end a climbing trip because my rope shreds prematurely. Of course there is no way to tell if it will until it actually does.

I will probably call my retailer and see if they will be willing to take it back. Yes I know climbing is dangerous, but I buy my gear expecting it to work all the time no exceptions. If I am given cause to doubt my gear I want different gear.

One interesting thing I found, or rather, didn't find... is any mention of ropes whatsoever on the Petzl web site. Search with "rope" returns results such as "rope clamps" and other technique or tools, but not actual rope. Searching with zephyr on the Petzl web site comes back with: "your search yielded no results..."

This seems a tad disturbing. Has Petzl got out of the rope business and left the rope on the market? If this is true I want a new rope!

(Actually I did manage to find some rope on their site by changing over to the professional side where it looks like they are selling static line.)

I bought one in early "08 and have use it on countless ascents and raps on all types of rock. I have never once had a problem with this rope. The ends did fray a little after a year of [ab]use but it was nothing a torch or lighter couldn't fix.

I wouldn't worry about it too much unless it is infact a batch issue and/or the sheath falls apart on some epic ascent/descent.

Can someone shed some light on why I can't find the zephyr on Petzl's web site, or any other dynamic rope? I am prepared to believe I am missing the link or something. I would just like to see that they do in fact still make rope.

I can only find Petzl climbing ropes on sites other then petzl.com

Edit to add: I just went through the entire pdf catalog and didn't find any Petzl ropes.

It is strange but I can't access that page on my own even knowing where it is > sport > verticality > dynamic ropes...

The Dynamic Ropes is not an option when I access the site from google... only an option when I access the site from your link.
