I too have made a bunch of my own gear, including this ledge Jeff P.S. You can read how to build a ledge like this here: http://www.rockclimbing.com/articles/view.php?ID=124 [ This Message was edited by: krustyklimber on 2002-11-25 20:02 ]

I have gotten some killer deals over the years. 2 old but never been used Yo hammers $10 for the pair, at a yard sale he wanted $20 for the pair I offered him $5 and we settled on $5 each, he thought they were just odd hammers and was happy to get $10 for them. 25 SMC shallow angles various sizes, 4 original RUPS, 3 solid Friends (old ones with the hex nuts on the axels), 30+ assortment of Chounard hexes some roped some wired and old Chounard roped stoppers, 2 pairs of EB’s, one Forest Tree hammer with ice pick and aid pick, 2 sets of old glacier crampons, 6 or so blind gate ovals which included Royal Robins and some other ancients, a Forest Tree Ice axe solid Aluminum with the Blue plastic coated handle, 5 Eiger Hexes, 4 SMC Camlocks, 5 Forest Tree T nuts, All For $158 (all the money I had at the time) from an add in the paper from a guy who found them in his basement from what I could gather and had no idea what he had. He kept 4 other solid Friends because I did not have enough cash. I still think I got a good deal without the other cams but was disappointed I did not have the other $20 for them. 3 #5 Camalots $100 brand New from a Retail shop in MI. Those are a few of the best deals I have gotten, to many to describe all of them. Happy hunting and don’t forget to check yard sales and Colorado Collages near the end of the semesters.

I feel sorry for the man who laughs at another for drinking PBR. PBR nursed me through college and also that long spell of unemployment that comes with graduating. I now drink PBR for sentimental reasons and I can buy twice as much for the same price. I also bought two pairs of used scarpa climbing shoes from some dude at the BD gear swap a year ago which came complete with fungus. I suffered for a month with that rash for those shoes. They cost me $10 dollars combined and I proudly wear both pairs to this day (minus the fungus). Never pass up a good deal!!!

I can out cheap all of you. Here's the story: I was new in college, and wanted to climb. Unfortunately, no climbing club. University has a policy that anyone can start a club, so I found some other people who knew something about the sport and started a club. After the first year, we petitioned the student government for money, since we were poor and had little gear. They gave us a little over a grand to buy stuff. The next year, we got another grand or so, but I was figuring out the system, and realized we were missing the big picture. So the following year, I got myself elected to the student government and placed on the finance committee, and this time we got $5000 for rock gear and some transportation and instruction expenses for our "annual budget", and then I went after the mother-load, and got another $10,000 from the "special allocations fund" to buy mountaineering equipment (-20 degree Marmot sleeping bags, Mountain Hardware tents, avalanche beacons, ice axes, crampons, ice screws, shovels, showshoes, hiking poles, etc, etc, etc). So I was basically able to go rock climbing, ice climbing, and mountaineering throughout college without having to purchase any of my own gear. We even took the club gear up Denali! (really nice having a $650 sleeping bag and $700 tent that aren't yours) That, my friends, is CHEAP!! [ This Message was edited by: tradguy on 2002-11-26 11:50 ]

Some people consider this wrong or immoral, but I fully beleave in taking advantage of the 90 day return policy at Walmart. Walmart funded my spring break trip last semester. Shortly before my trip I bought three sleeping bags, three sleeping pads, a tent, camping stove, cookware, etc... (unfortunatly they don't sell climbing gear) After the trip I took it all back for a full refund. The only thing they wouldn't take back were the sleeping pads which had foot prints all over them. (Yeah, I'm cheap and lazy) Any way, I don't think it's wrong, I think walmart is wrong, so I have no problem taking advantage of them. There are other companies that have similar or better return policies which I choose not to abuse. BTW- I also borrowed a 27" TV for my dorm room last semester, my roomate borrowed a play station.

My crash pad is a small mattress that I found at a thrift store. Only cost me 5 bucks. It is kind of a pain to haul around but I'd rather spend my money on trad gear.

1 shovel - $18 gas to pornstarr's mom's grave- $12.50 1 new "wifebeater" to soil with grave dirt- $3.99 Knowing you are going to get some- PRICELESS. Dinner with one of my dates costs more than all that... and it's not a sure thing. (Actually, I will admit to not being into getting laid so much as finding one cool partner and getting kinky. OMG)

Okay, I was hoping I wouldn't have to go into this. At target I found a water bottle holder fanny pack on clearance for $3. I cut off the fannypack part, put a gromet in the top and I had a chalk bag. I found a sewing machine in the dumpster. A new tensioner knob, a few bobbins and a holder were all it needed. I used it to sew my harnesses. But I was too cheap to keep it, so I sold my sewing machine to a friend who would let me use it when I needed it. I machined the buckels for the harness out of some aluminum scrap. I was not so cheap as to use cheap thread or webbing, though. My brother trashed the rands of my shoes while I was out of the country. I was not willing to ship them away forto a fancya re-sole place, so I took them to a local shoe repair guy who did it much cheaper. Shure turned out strange. But that wasn't until after I had tried a bicyle tube and contact cement. I still have to re-glue them ever year. I cut the seat belt webbing out of my friends car before the wrecker came to tow it to the junk yard. I really try not to be too cheap when it comes to climbing gear, but I can't help it. I was hoping that I would not have to resort to bragging about this kind of cheapness, but my previous post of honorable cheapness just isn't enough for this forum topic.

sunsation thoes shoes that you found didnt happen to be ananasazi, velcos, that where in the parking lot at the end of january, cause if they were i was looking at them two but they were in rough shap and looked a little to gross for me. by the way i think i met you. then two when climbing with duncan. sucks about the car, but if thoes were the shoes im glad that a more deserving soul then my self got them, (i did rip the heal off of my shoes that day mind you) as for dirt baggin it i went to squamish for 4 days in the summer food, ferrie and every thing eles for $21.65 that is good, cause the ferrie is 9.50 each way if you pay.

Although I wasn't as ambitious as tradguy I too started a climbing club in college and got the school to fork over a couple grand for ropes and other gear. The best part was that after I graduated the climbing club mysteriously disbanded and all the gear was missing. I wonder what ever happened to all that gear. mmmuuuuuu ha ha ha ha

How cheap am I? Traded my lacrosse stick for 100' of static and a new locker. (Not bad, eh?) Drove from Georgia to Cali in late may with no A/C at 65 m.p.h. to get better gas mileage. I am going to Portrero on the 29th for two weeks with a budget of $150 including gas driving from the ATL... Four people in my Corolla and it's all good. Oh yeah, the heat is off in my house, too. Brrrr. I don't pride myself in being a tighwad, but all that bling-bling can be applied to more climbing trips!

Northface Trail Shoes: $1.06 (including sales tax) from Marshall's. They are men's shoes, but they fit my feet perfect. They are two years old and I am still wearing them.
