What is considered to be the correct thing to do when you either fall off an overhanging gym route or just ran out of steam. You have gone approximately halfway up of the overhanging ledge. Is it appropriate to swing back using the rope?

The correct answer is to climb until you send it or fall, and then yell falling if the later. As far as swinging intentionally in the gym, it is always a bad idea. Everyone's life depends on the rope you are on. If you abuse it, it will not last as long. I have attempted routes in the gym that had huge swing potentials, and fallen. Going for a 20' swing. It was great fun, but should not be done intentionally. I have been in a grain silo when someone was intentially swing away from the wall, jumping and having a good time. It really pissed me off because it was distracting my concentration, and if the worst happened, and his rope broke, etc. etc. he may have hit my belayer, putting me in tight spot.

Sometimes it takes more energy to do so than to lower & reclimb, but even then it's your call. No difference between the overhang or vertical wall in terms of this - just the energy involved.

In reply to: As far as swinging intentionally in the gym, it is always a bad idea. Everyone's life depends on the rope you are on. If you abuse it, it will not last as long. Fail. While swinging intentionally can get you looks of "noob," falling off & swinging to get back on are legitimate. Gyms should have a retirement schedule for their ropes, since everyone's life (and their insurance) depend them. Gyms should not be using low usage ropes.

Ahhhh - it was the distraction. If the rope is in that much danger of breaking - DON'T CLIMB!

I was under the same impression. If the rope is so frail, perhaps I shouldn't be climbing with it. Thanks for confirming.

As long as you're not swinging into someone else, then swing away and do what it takes to get back on the wall. Though, as someone else noted, the energy required is something more than it's worth.

I think the worst thing would be the silo collapsing but the likelihood of that is about the same as the rope breaking. d.

You know, frequently silos are private affairs, not businesses...maybe the worry of the rope breaking is more real than we are giving credence.

Seriously??? DMT I myself have seen at least 73.54792 cases of ropes breaking while being swung on. Its more common than you might think Dingus. You know that a lot of gyms use static ropes right? Those things are like dry twigs, they are fine to fall on, but the moment you start swinging they snap. Complete madness, I dont know why anyone climbs.

I wasn't seriously worried he would break the rope, but I was talking about Stone Works. Hahaha. I was saying it that drastic because I hate jackasses that are jumping 10-15 off the wall out into the middle of the silo while on their 5.7, while you are working a route at or beyond your limit. That is too tight an area to be acceptable.

Perhaps Andrew, you shouldn't make halfa**ed coments about others complaining about footballs and belayers being used as maypoles if you are going to be worried about someone falling and swinging to get back on. A fall and a swing while climbing are part of the sport. Having to complain the wall management because you are a target for footballs and frisbees while climbing, and you belayer is being used as a maypole by 4 people, one fo whom is the 'instructor' while you are leading is a whole different thing. The response of the management at the wall you have been promoting, in the hope of being allowed to set routes, was to ignore me completely, and friends who have been there recently say things have not changed. The management makes more money from the kids groups than the ordinary climbers. cookie

Your right, I posted your email. It should be published. Accept my appology. See the thread on Dynorock. But I digress, this thread has gone way off topic. It is ok to swing if it is from a fall and can't be helped. It is also ok to swing to get back on route. But for goodness sake, don't be that dude that horseplaying around.
