Not a comment on the gear section - but - it pretty much sucks that new classified listings don't show up in 'Recent Posts'...

For now you can click on the manufacturer name and see all items by that manufacturer. We're working in more advanced search and sort options as we speak...

We do show recent classifieds on the home page of the classifieds section (http://www.rockclimbing.com/classifieds/). Where else would you want to see this?

In with the 'Recent Posts' of the Forum. If people don't explicitly go to classifieds they never see them. That worked to my advantage recently in that I found a Dolt piton languishing there, but as a seller it wouldn't make me happy...

OK, I understand. We're changing the layout of the Classifieds section and will launch it soon. We think that may drive some more traffic to the section.

The problem isn't the layout - any layout - it's with the fact that you have to explicitly go there. When someone lists something for sale I want it to show up in 'Recent Posts'. That will drive more traffic, regardless of what you visually do to that section.
