Bad news, I just went to Smith Rock’s popular X-free camping area Skull Hollow, and you have to pay now. For $5.00 per night + $3.00 per car you get NO toilet paper, NO garbage or NO water, just a US Forest Service ticket of you do not pay. Remember the new National USFS road plan if you get off the designated road on there map you will be ticketed, you no longer have the right to use public lands, you only have a right to stay on the roads. Mad Rock

Mad Rock that is a good news but wait till next year when Gov is fully bankrupt then it would be $30

Mad Rock When you pull into skull hollow, there is a fork in the road. Left goes into the campground and right goes off towards cattle land. Did you try going right, off into the sticks?

That is so sad! That place was like the free, dirtbag, no pay, hippie haven. I mean I'm glad they aren't giving out anything...ala toilet paper, water or garbage cans, just don't charge either. Ugh.

There are a couple of remote campsites (or at least firerings) iirc. I even did my first climb EVA on a cliff off of that road.

I was just curious if the OP bothered to check in that direction. It seems like a lot of people never drive that way when the hollow is crowded.

I definitely have...one time I went and (we called it the grasslands) it was completely packed and I was not camping at the smith campground LOL. They will probably get those spots in with the skull hollow area soon enough...they aren't unpopular in my experience.

i found the smith bivouac site to be quite pleasant...we were there sunday to thursday of the week...met great people and didnt have to deal with loud parties or drunk rednecks common to my local crag in IL...a little pricey but nothing in comparison to camping in the northeast or in national parks also i didnt think that the $5 charge was new. read about it somewhere before i went there

NO FREE CAMPING GET OFF THE KINGS LAND The government assholes who made this decision should be defunded and forced to get real jobs instead of being bloodsucking ticks on societies ass. This will cost significantly more to implement than they could ever make, and force folks to either become criminals or disperse throughout the area increasing the impacts X10.

Of course there is the undocumented third option: pay up or go somewhere else.

The funny thing is, most of you voted for those government assholes.
