I mountain and road bike. Both do take time for a good workout and I have no kids to deal with.
If you're in a big city (like Cleveland) it could be tough. Don't know enough about the city layout to say.
There is, believe it or not, an indoor mountain bike park in Cleveland though.
For pools - the gym to which I belong uses salt water for purification, not chlorine. Much nicer. Might be worth checking for a pool that does this in your area.
Racquetball and tennis are great cardio workouts also.

Get up and ride your bike early, before you leave for work. It's very motivating when you are on the road by yourself surrounded by beautiful scen.... oh wait, you live in Ohio. Sorry ;)
No seriously, I face the same problem. I think cardio is important but it is hard to get motivated. I used to run 50 to 60 miles a week and even did a few half marathons but that was 7 and 8 years ago when I was in high school. Traffic keeps me off my bike and the heat keeps me from running. I work 'til 11 or 12 at night so getting up at 6 just doesn't work.
The only time I find myself motivated to do any type of cardio is when I'm living in Thailand and I can hike/run to the viewpoint in the morning. Unless you have amazing viewpoints near your house, you may just have to suffer the boringness of spinning or drive far enough away so that there is no traffic and ride your bike.
PS, swimming is an excellent idea but it might interfere with your climbing depending on how hard you swim. I would do that except for my lack of access to a pool and the fact that I get kind of claustrophobic when my face is always in the water.
When I'm at the climbing gym I warm up by jumping rope. That is a hell of a cardio workout if you do it right and definitely less boring than other gym cadio options.

Dance any kind. Listen to music and move around to the beat. Try one of the things you don't like once a week. Take a bike to lisbon. Look for a runners club in your area and find someone at your level that runs at nite. Can't find the time was not a valid excuse for me. I ran for years and for me, "I was worth it" It being the hour of time each day. Good luck. I bike and hike. I wish I could still run.

I try to go running 4 or 5 times a week, 30-45 minutes each... I think it is the most efficient cardio workout (for time put in) and the most practical (no expensive equipment or gym membership required). I think running is quite difficult in the beginning... It isn't 'fun', you are alone (unless with a running group), and it is (initially) hard. For me, running with music helps to motivate me. Regularity is definitely key. I think if you run fewer than 3x a week, it becomes a huge chore. With 3x a week and up, fitness gains occur more quickly and running begins to feel normal and more enjoyable. As for time... I think everyone can spare even 20 minutes x3 a week to exercise, if it is a priority. If it means getting up 20 minutes earlier or whatever....

I play soccer a couple of times per week too. There's a huge co-ed recreational league here that's pretty fun. It's a lot more entertaining than jogging, and great exercise, although my thighs definately get bigger when I'm playing a lot.

Ultimate is awesome. Sidenote: I'm honestly surprised there isn't a professional, televised ultimate league. There's more running than soccer (and more hard/sprint running), the throws can be beautifully accurate and often seem to defy physics which would translate well to television, and it's higher scoring than other sports (baseball, soccer (again, sorry!)).
I think you might want to reconsider crossfit as well. The "cult"-ure surrounding crossfit is a turn-off but they're basic body weight routines are killer and simple. Usually all you need is a park with room to run and a playground. You can get a workout that will leave you blazed for a day in 20 minutes or less and the best parts are that there is a lot of variety and you can get competitive with yourself. In sum, I advocate a protestant form of crossfit-lite.

Heh, crossfit. On a strength training forum i've heard crossfit described as "a bunch of GPP* nazis who wouldn't know program progression if it hit them in the head with a 45 pound plate; they will be the first against the wall when the revolution comes." Ok, maybe that overstates the point a little, but i dig hyperbole.
I am about to add the versa-climber into my weekly regime. My gym at work actually has one. As I recall from the past, it is a very intensive workout and I'm curious to see how well it will aid in climbing, in addition to the other cardio I'm doing.

Another runner, also another recent convert. I always said I hated running, that I couldn't run, that my exercise-induced asthma held me back, that it was boring, too hot/cold/windy/rainy, that I didn't have time. Now, I'm about 13 months into a regular (3-4x/week) running regimen that's seen me through 4 half marathons and preparing for my first full marathon in Sept. What the heck happened?
Well, some friends got the idea that a bunch of us should try to do the San Fran Nike Women's HM together. When we didn't make it in (lottery-entry), a few of us picked another HM and I found myself sucked in by the camaraderie and idea of the challenge. Somehow I was hooked, and now I make it a point to find time for my 3 runs every week (a 4th when I can). The key to making it work--running only 3x/wk to prep for a marathon seems crazy to many dedicated runners--is that all 3 runs are done for target paces and two of them are high intensity (the 3rd is long but still at a faster pace than many training programs proscribe). So, if you're short on time but can manage to find a way to like (if not love) running, intervals and tempo runs are ways to squeeze a killer cardio workout into a relatively short amount of time.
I run whenever my schedule and the weather dictates; I just know that I can always find at least some window of time in the day twice a week (fitting in the long run, up to 3 hours, takes more of a commitment).

I have a fused and screwed ankle (literally, figuratively) so I can no longer run. In fact, any high impact cardio activity is pretty much impossible. So, in winter months, I XC ski regularly (1X weekly) and supplement that with a few days weekly on the Stairmaster. Yes, it's boring, but I add a 25 lb. pack one day each week just to mix things up. When the snow melts, I substitute my road bike for skis.
This combination keeps me reasonably fit, but it seems to take a greater amount of time and effort to match the level of cardio fitness I had when I was running 4-5 days weekly.

I was never a big fan of the versa climber, and (full disclosure) I work for the guys who make the treadwall, so I use that for ~30-45 minutes at a time 3-4 days a week along with my regular climbing, and my endurance has noticeably incrased.
With that being said I run ~3 days a week for 20 minutes (It really, really sucks; but it is only 20 minutes...) and ride my bike to work 3 days a week rain or shine(this is more pleasant, but definitely less of a cardio burn).
I definitely think that running is the best in terms of time, but please, please don't be one of the many silly people running on concrete/asphalt. There are plenty of trails, grass parks, and school tracks available that won't kill your knees. And please don't run on treadmills, as ugly as the streets of Boston are for me (or your local city), they are still much more pleasant than the deathly walls of a gym.

You may find a liking in a rowing machine. I like the Water Rower more than others, it is a great workout, full body and no impact. (after 5 knee surgeries, my doctor has told me not to run anymore if i can avoid it - i can't avoid it yet, sorry doc)

Hahaha... that coupled with the 'sex diet' really works. Seriously though, send me $ (large bills, please) and I will send you a pamphlet outlining the program. It's like p90x but for your genitals.

I don't want to come off sounding like an a** but it sounds to me like you want a miracle. You don't want to do this exercise, that one is no fun, and so forth. I run, bike and am starting to swim and I don't think any of it is "FUN" but it's what I have to do to enjoy the type of climbing I do. In the winters I play hockey 2-4 times a week this is the only exercise I consider fun besides hiking/climbing.
Nobody has mentioned it but why not exercise with your kids??? I have a neighbor that is a single mom of four and she can outrun/hike me any day of the week. When the youngest two couldn't ride a bike she would put them in a trailer and ride with the other two. The extra weight made it a good workout for her at a speed the other two kids could keep up with. Now that they are older she runs/jogs while the four kids ride their bikes.
You could also go on hikes with the kids. May have to carry one of them or carry a lot of their stuff either way it's a better workout for you.
Granted, I live in a small town with mountains out my back door but am sure there is something for you to do around your neck of the woods.
If you really want the work out you will find a way!

I've run on and off over the years---was on the track team in high school and college. Achilles tendon injuries eventually made it pretty hard to do, until late in life (I'm 65 now) I discovered trail running. The ground is softer than concrete, you use a completely non-uniform gait because of obstacles, and it turns out I can do that.
My runs are typically short (2-3 miles) because even so my legs can't take too much, and I never do two runs without two rest days in between. My trail pace (hilly terrain) is about 9-10 min/mile, so the whole thing is over in a half hour or less.
But, as others have noted, it is hard to do this after work and pretty much impossible for me once daylight savings time is over because I have an hour and twenty minute commute.
The other thing I've done for many years is jump rope. Once you've learned to do it, it is very low impact, lower than running, because your feet barely leave the ground except perhaps when doing doubles, but then you're landing on both feet.
There's the interest in learning different gaits and rope tricks, you can do it almost anywhere you can stand if the ceilings aren't too low, and you can carry a jump rope with you anywhere.
Pretty much whenever I go to the climbing gym (twice a week in the winter) I start out with 10-15 minutes of jumping for warmup purposes. I don't buy for a second that it is equivalent to a much longer run; jumping is easier than running once you've learned to do it. And although it can be made very aerobic, you get no uphill leg conditioning. Still, for those of us with a lot of demands on our time and without the ability to carve out a dedicated running time, I think jumping rope is just about perfect.

Do something that involves your kids and your kids will learn the importance and benefits of exercise. Do squat lunges with while giving one a piggy back on a walk.. they'll laugh hysterically and you'll get a great workout. Play tag with them and chase them around the yard for 5 or 10 minute intervals. JUMP ROPE. etc.. be creative. You can, pretty much, make anything cardio-beneficial if you do it quickly. For instance, do a set of 25 pushups then immediately do 25 crunches on exercise ball then 5 pull ups then 10 one legged squats (with your back against the wall, making sure your knee does not go past your toes) with each leg, repeat 3x or until failure, rest 2 minutes. repeat. Do this for 20-30 min 3-5x per week... again, be creative you'll soon figure out a bunch of different variations of each exercise (especially if you use an exercise ball). Also, your core is key. Engage your core as much as possible.
