I want to try ice this year. Any suggestions of how to get started? I don't want to buy equipment etc...I don't know if I will like it or not.

Ask around the local climbing community. You'll most likely find someone willing to take you along to try it out. Bring your harness, warm boots (you can learn in beefy hiking boots or snowboard boots, but ice-specific boots are much easier to use!), plenty of layers (synthetic), something "puffy" to belay in, two pairs of gloves (one small dexterous pair for climbing...this pair will get wet, so you'll want a pair of warm dry gloves or mitts for belaying), helmet, glasses, and extra wool socks.
A thermos full of your favorite hot beverage is a good way to keep partners (as long as you share!). High calorie foods to snack on during the day will help you stay warm (nuts, chocolate, ect...), again, share!
Oh, and you can't go wrong if you show up at a local ice spot (fully prepared), and ask if you can "try it out" on someone's toprope. Again, tasty snacks and warm drinks can improve your chances.
Glen Onoko falls has some very regular locals that go up nearly every day of the week (when the ice is in). Birdsboro gets ice occasionally from what I hear, and I think that is closer to you, so you might want to look into that as well.

Thanks for your reply. I have had plenty of folks offer, I just need to find some ice boots. No one in this area rents boots. Maybe I will try Rock and Snow at the gunks.
Is Glen Onoko near Jim Thorpe?

But I take size 42/42.5, a pretty common size. It'll be harder to find a pair of ice boots second hand for the smaller feet you have (but I did find a pair of boots for a friend who wears W7 last year for $80, so they're out there).

I know Rock and Snow rents boots, poons and tools, as I have done so. I think the Mountaineer in Keene Valley, NY does too.

All good suggestions. The way that I got into ice was by hanging around climbing shops all the time trying to meet climbers. It worked. Got on a trip to NH, and from there the bank account has suffered. Then came aid climbing... I don't think it will ever recover...

Yeah, Glen Onoko is in Jim Thorpe.
I bought my girlfriend some ice boots on ebay for $55 shipped. For the price of renting boots twice, you could OWN a pair. Then if you get really into it, you can shell out the $$$ for the specific model you want, and have a backup pair for a friend to use. A used pair of leather ice boots has many uses in the winter besides climbing. They are great for hiking in the snow, shoveling your driveway, ect... Considering most boots cost 300-500 new, and are built to last 10-15 years, spending $50-100 on a used pair is a great investment.

The last three years have been very snowy in the North East. Two years ago was very heavy, with resorts closing with top to bottom snow and
several cities in the NE US and Canada breaking all time snowfall records.
Last winter Maine broke it's all time record low with -48 F and Westhampton NY set a record at -14 F.
