So I picked up a killer soft-shell that will handle nearly everything I need in a shell. However there are times where I will be out in colder climates and if I wanted to layer underneath it what is the fabric/product of choice?

I don't have room for bulky layering underneath so even if the fabric is really spend that's fine so long as it's super warm, wicks moisture and operates in the same spirit as my Cloudveil Rayzar that I got for a stealing deal. Cannot believe I got Schoeller fabrics in it. Most of the Rayzars do not have that. Pretty sweet!

Anyway... what would you layer underneath the shell?

Under Layers I like the Patagonia Cap 3 for heavy indurence days in the cold, if there are long belays or if the temp drops below 0 I use the cap 4

so true. this hoody will not only make you a ninja, but it will do the dishes, pay for your kids college, and repel demons while you sleep. It repels demons by throwing invisible used underwear at them.

I don't wear underwear so that's a concern. If it's throwing my wife's underwear I'm pissed cuz that's my job.

I'm going to beat the piss out of my r1 just to make sure it knows the underwear thing ain't happening in my house. DAAAAAAAMN STRAIGHT!!! That's how I roll!Crazy

Wool is the big craze now. And for good reason. R1 is an awesome suggestion, Icebreaker makes some nice stuff with prints that you can reasonably wear everyday as well.

Synthetics are slightly cheaper (retail price anyway) but they don't last quite as long and don't feel quite as nice IMHO

Also there is the stink factor. If you go on multiday trips then that is an issue, if you use a piece for a couple hours on a Saturday afternoon it is just hype. With that said there is a huge difference between synthetic and wool underwear after a week of solid use.
