Rockclimbing.com is a cool place to share info, learn new things, brag about our most recent climbs, and meet new people. In other words it’s a great resource! But, I’m wondering why there is so many rude post from people when they don’t agree with another point. Or, why some climbers put down newbie’s.

Yes, it's human nature. A drag... or entertaining... depends on your attitude at the time of reading the posts. I'm usually amused.

People seem to get very excited over the simplist things. I think that one of the main problems is that people feel superior when they put down someone else. Maybe they feel like they don't know enough about climbing so they are afraid when others try and gain knowledge by asking questions on the forum.

It is amusing sometimes. Its best to just ignore, but admittedly difficult. I don't think that the people doing the bashing are hiding behind their computers though. I think they are just happy to have a larger audience.

One of the reasons I posted this thread was hopefully to make people think about what they are saying in their posts. We were all taught to treat others as we wish to be treated. Reading some of the post of late I’m guessing some people have forgotten that golden rule. Thanks for everyones input!

Intersting thoughts. Most climber I MEET are usually cool people but to judge by this site you'd think we're all whimpering whining babies who do nothing but bicker amongst ourselves! I am not without fault by any means. I know I find myself replying to post just to get re-action at times. I'll lay something out there harshly or sarcastically to play devils advocate in an attempt to get people to think about things in different way. I may not even agree with what I'm saying all the time, sometimes I just feel the neeed to disagree. Question everything! I'll make an attempt to curtail this no doubt annoying habit of mine.

You know there are sites where everyone is very sweet and considerate, not sarcastic, not rude, and places like that too. There are sports where people are like that as well, unfortunately Marcel this is not the the sport or the site Perhaps you need to find someplace more suitable to your demeanor and needs, this obviously bothers you. You can just not login, and it will make you less upset. It would be easier than asking all of rockclimbing.com to change how they express their opinions. take care, Marcel

Small people often have a need to make themselves feel bigger by putting others down. A faceless web-forum is the perfect "hiding place" for these worms. Don't let them bother you -- they're not worth your time. Just don't stoop to their level. This site isn't all that bad, actually. If you want to experience some real flame, check out the forum on supertopo.com. Unfortunately, though it could be a really good place for folks to exchange beta, they mostly just blow hot air at each other.

Being rude and mean isn't doing the sport much justice. Why would you want to give that image to people? And, though there ARE a lot of rude climbers that get their kicks by knocking others, there are also nice climbers. Unfortunately, the negative ones are a lot LOUDER. The way I see it is that the ones who feel bashing is necessary are the same ones that are full of ego and insecurity and greatly lacking in sensitivity and maturity (and, what ropegirl said). Take away climbing and their computer monitor, and what do you have? It's soooooooo unnecessary people! [ This Message was edited by: catwoman on 2002-12-02 22:48 ]

Hello enigma, I'm not asking everyone to change, or even be sweet. I'm just hoping that more people will be a bit more considerate of other views. As a long time environmentalist who lives in the heart of some of the most conservative minded people in the USA I'm use to people being rude to me, and have been flamed beyound your wildest dreams. So, it's not that my skin is not tough enough. As a climber who started climbing in the mid 60's and who has climbed around the world, I have generaly found climbers to be considerate and helpful to others. After all we trust our very lives to others when we climb. I know I'd sure hate to be belayed on a hairy lead by a self centered, inconsiderate person. Hope you take care too.
