I am going to be pulling week long workshifts in New Orleans in September, October, and returning to Raleigh NC on the weekend (most weekends anyway).
If I wanted to fly somewhere else to go climbing, where would you recommend?
The plane ticket will have to be roughly equivalent to a trip home, so I can expense it . . . Don't mind renting a car if necessary.
Sport, trad, bouldering are all good . . . Probably need a partner for the first two though.

That's easy: SLC. 45 minutes or so to climbing, primarily sports/trad, and lots of it. Best served by Delta.

I'm thinkin' that Vegas is a good option during October/November.

Vegas baby, Vegas . . . At least that was what I was thinking until I checked the flight options. They suck! Its like 6-8 hours each way, expensive, and there are not a lot of good departure times.
I guess people who live in Vegas have little reason to travel to New Orleans to party and visa versa.
Any other suggestions?

NY, Da Gunks! Rental from NY City or Take the train to Poughkeepsie and then a rental or taxi. Usually can russell up a partner on the carriage road.

Lexington KY (45 minutes from the Red River Gorge). A lifetime of climbing (sport and trad)
Monterrey, MEXICO, go to EPC (45 minutes from MTY), several lifetimes of sport climbing

Mexico . . . good suggestion, I had not thought of that. Looks like tickets are running at around $500 . . . Unfortunately, I don't think I could get away with that expense report.

Bummer on Vegas. How about Phoenix or Tucson? For that matter, Denver or Colorado Springs?

Colorado Springs is a good suggestion. I have friends in Manitou Springs (just west of CS). Garden of the Gods and Red Rock Canyon Open Space would both be about a half-hour from the airport. It's absolutely beautiful there.
It's a shame about Vegas, as Red Rock NCA is only about half an hour from the airport, as well. You'd have loads of great sport and trad climbing at your fingertips.

I'm looking at a great airfare right into Middleburgh, NY, actually -- which is way more convenient than my previous itineraries.
Seriously, though, there have to be good deals to Vegas. Red Rocks is practically visible from the airport. You can also go up to Mt. Charleston (45 min) or to Zion from there (2.5 hours).

Ok . . . The trick with making the Vegas flight schedule work would be leaving at 1AM Monday morning, and barely making in on time for work . . . Otherwise I would have to leave early Sunday morning and have only Saturday to climb. Too short.
I think SLC might be a little easier and convenient . . . I am also considering Chattanooga. Choices, choices.
Oh, Moab would be killer, but it did not come up on Travelocity. Do you have to charter a small plane from Denver to Moab? Is that really cheap?

Denver International Airport. 45 minutes to boulder (1,000 + climbs) and about the same to Golden (400 or so climbs). also, it will be cheaper than flying to SLC from new orleans and back to NC. DIA is United's western hub. the weather will be roughly the same in either.

Redmond, Oregon (RDM), which is Bend/Central Oregon's regional airport. Has links from Denver and SLC coming from the east. Smith is like 15 minutes away. If you come give me a shout.

What about New Hampshire. PERFECT sending weather then! Fly Southwest New Orleans-Manchester. Depending when you book flights are as low as $144.
Quick ride to Rumney, Cannon, Pawtuckaway, Cathedral and White Horse. If you wanted straight bouldering you could fly to Providence and go to Lincoln Woods.....

I'm pretty sure I've flown from Lexington to NOLA non-stop... maybe I stopped in ATL, I'm not sure.
If you can get direct flights, it's not hard to find partners at the Red and I'm not sure there is another place I'd rather be when the weather is good. OH wait! I'd rather be at the New, because there isn't an airport nearby :)
Loads of partners at the Red also, cheap camping and bangin' pizza!
