Let me get this straight, you plan on setting an anchor for rappel, feeding a whack of slack thru your rap device and then jumping?

Perhaps I'm missing something but not only does that sound silly it sounds dangerous.

If you want to get free fall I wouldn't rely on yourself to hold the rap when you impact. Why don't you take a hint from Dan Osman (who is died doing this by the way) and tie into the end so unless you have a catastrophic failure of your anchor or rope, you don't have anything to do with ensuring that you remain attached to the rope when you jump?

I'd use a chest harness too if I was you.

I wouldn't invite your familly to see this by the way you would really wreck their day if they saw you crater.

Oh ok i gatchya. There was a guy famous for that a few years ago but i cant remember his name. Dave Osman? I have done it a few times but it is bad on the rope since it gives you a fall factor of 1 unless you let the rope slip through the belay device as it is catching you. though i have never done this, i have always tied the belay off. Not doing this seems a bit dangerous.. what do you think?

Dan Osman died from doing crazy 1000ft bungie jumping which is not exactly a slack rappel.. yes they are dangerous but they are good practice for lead falls.. cause it somthing you gotta learn how to do correctly

I saw a guy doing this on "RealTV"(reruns on TNN every day). He misjudged the length and broke every bone in his face. They even showed him bouncing into the bushes after he decked.

lostangel;

You are trying to equate lead belay skills to slack rope rap jumping? They aren't the same thing at all. If you want to be a better belayer then belay a bunch, watch other people belay, ask your partners what they think about your belays. See which partners like a tight rope and which want a looser rope. See what you like your belay to be like and then get your partners to do that. Pay attention to your climber.

You don't get better at lead belaying by hooking up a rapell and then jumping off a cliff with some slack out. All you get better at is being a patient when you GF and like someone else mentioned break every bone in your face or break a rib and puncture a lung.

Paul

Edit:

And if you want to take lead falls why don't you do it on lead rather than on rapell?

Jerry: Funny thing, I was talking to a guy not two hours ago who saw that same show and was telling me about it.

Paul, I am fine at lead belaying, have lead, and have taken lead falls. I mainly plan on doing it because I think it will be fun. I do understand that I need to be extremly careful on how much slack is put out, and to take into concideration the strech of the rope, A friend of mine did it took out to much slack and ended up only a couple feet from the ground, also I will use two ropes. No Im not saying its safe I'm not even saying its sain its just something I plan on doing

I've pulled down a lot of slack then jumped while on belay on top rope. The belayer comes a long ways off the ground but it's probably way softer than on rappel because of the extra rope. It's a rush even with only a short free-fall.

If you plan on rope flying as it is called. You need to find a steeply overhanging climb or some sort of span so you don't wack into the wall.

Be safe, triple check your 12 point equalized anchor, and jump.

uh, stupid! if you really want to take rigged falls(god only knows why, just climb harder and you'll fall anyway), tie in and jump. rappel devices are not designed for this, and the rope being loaded over a small diameter edge like the side of an atc is not a good plan. think before you jump - dan osman was one of the best riggers who ever lived and things did not always go well for him.

Well, I still don't see why but whatever. Have fun. You'd better be good at anchors.

Hi,
Try www.gravityoutlaw.com this web-site is dedicated to Rap Jumping / Rope Rushing. Try using a 11mm Blue Water static line with a large Harpoon Fig 8. I would strongly advice not to use the system you've discussed, climbing ropes are for climbing and not for Rap Jumping. But good luck & most importantly have safe fun.
